Un equipo de investigación de una universidad española, en colaboración con el Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas, ha desarrollado un nuevo método de liberación controlada de medicamentos compuesto por cristales de hidrogel basado en proteínas. Específicamente ha desarrollado un procedimiento de producción de hidrogel que contiene proteínas cristalizadas con actividad farmacológica, que crecen in situ dentro del hidrogel con un tamaño de 12 micras. El equipo de investigación centra su trabajo en la insulina, aunque también pueden emplearse otras proteínas de interés terapéutico. Se buscan empresas farmacéuticas y biotecnológicas con el fin de establecer acuerdos de licencia.

Description:
Scientists from a Spanish university in collaboration with a the National Research Council have created a new form for a controlled drug release composed by protein based hydrogel crystals. The research group developed a procedure for fabricating hydrogel that contains crystalized proteins with pharmacological activity that grow in-situ inside de hydrogel with a medium size of 12 microns (with some being even smaller than 5 microns).

The group has focused their research work on insulin, being able to generate injectable compounds that contain insulin mycrocrystals obtained in media with biocompatible and biodegradable hydrogels elaborated from agarose and dialanine.

A number of in vivo studies have been carried out successfully on rats (since they show lower specificity for insulin than other species). The technology can be used with other proteins with therapeutic interest, as for example recombinant albumin or alkaline phosphatase.

The research group is looking for a company in order to reach a license agreement.
Advantages and Innovations:
· The new protein compounds show a better controlled release and high stability
· Lower costs compared with the current systems
· The gel/crystal combination allows to develop different administration profiles with the same formulation of insulin, since the absorption kinetics are different depending on the gel used
· The mixture can be kept at low temperatures, showing in situ crystal growing
· No acetone is used in the composition
