Description:
Founded in 1968 as a workgroup for applied materials research, the research institute in Bremen is one of 60 members of the German non-profit institue society and currently employs more than 300 people. The Adhesive Bonding Technology and Surfaces department of the institute performs research on multifunctional coatings, sealants, paints, adhesive bonding, polymer chemistry as well as lightweight construction, plasma and lacquer technology. This includes the pretreatment and functionalisation of surfaces, applications of nano-microparticles, surface and interface analysis, electrochemistry, and computational materials modeling.

The work of the institute ranges from fundamental research to the introduction of new products to the market. The institute cooperates with a host of companies in a broad range of industries including automotive, aircraft, and rail vehicles - as well as their sub-suppliers - the machinery and plant construction sector, the electrical and electronics industries and medical engineering.

Major work is carried out in the development/definition of test equipment for testing of anti-icing behaviors and coordinating of ice test facilities.

For the anti-ice coating two different approaches are under development:
- passive icephobic coatings with ice-repelling properties
- active heatable coatings and combination with passive icephobic coatings

The anti-ice solutions reduce the negative impact of icing on rotorblades (switch-off times due to safety concerns, material damage due to imbalance etc.)
The anti-drag coating is a microstructured coating (often reffered to as "shark-skin-coatings") which is applied with a special roller device.
The anti-drag solutions optimize the air flow in terms of increase in lift and decrease of drag. Both impacts are proven through wind-channel experiments.
Advantages and Innovations:
The Paint Technology department of the institue has great experience regarding anti-ice surface technologies. This includes the development of anti-ice coatings and anti-drag coatings for different industrial applications and provides specific test equipment for performance testing of anti-ice surfaces.
The past ice-related projects were conducted for all kinds of means of transportation as well as wind energy sector within bilateral industry projects, national funded projects as well as EU-funded projects.
Drag-reducing coatings were developed for the aeronautic-industry and first successful wind-channel experiments were carried out, which indicated a potential increase of annual power output by approx. 6%.
