Un centro de investigación griego ha desarrollado una nueva tecnología para fabricar pantallas flexibles basadas en laminados de composite de grafeno/polímero. Las películas fabricadas se integran con un circuito flexible para conferir las funcionalidades deseadas. El desarrollo de películas delgadas de grafeno/polímero se basa en un proceso de producción automático mediante el cual se encapsulan películas grandes de grafeno en sustratos de plástico de distintos tamaños y bajo coste. El grupo de investigación busca socios industriales en el sector de electrónica de consumo para incorporar la tecnología en sus productos. El objetivo es establecer acuerdos comerciales con asistencia técnica.

Graphene is the thinnest and strongest material available today and due to its lightweight and electrical characteristics is extremely promising for flexible displays manufacturing. European Union is currently investing considerably through the Graphene Flagship initiative to reinforce R-Y-D in this field, while market trends show a promising future for the flexible display industry which is now in its infancy. Touch screen technology is expected to be revolutionized by the flexible films made by alternate stacks of single layer graphene and thin transparent polymeric film. The successful integration of graphene in the flexible device technology is mainly based on the production process and its transferability onto various substrates.
The research group has developed a novel technology to fabricate flexible displays based on graphene/polymer composite laminates. The produced films can be integrated with a flexible circuitry to impart desired functionalities into the bendable displays. The development of graphene/polymer thin film will be based on an automated production process, where large graphene sheets are encapsulated in various sizes, low-cost plastic substrates. The produced thin sheets will be the building block for the production of laminated form flexible displays. The team has the appropriate equipment and know-how to produce high quality, large area single graphene layers and to use lamination techniques for directly transferring graphene onto different types of flexible substrates. Among others, the list of potential applications of the proposed technology includes electronic pricing labels in retail shops, advertising billboards and leaflets, digital signage, time tables at bus stations, mobile phone displays, foldable e-paper and many others.

Graphene is a one-atom thick membrane that includes a unique combination of optical transparency, conductivity, elasticity, as well as robustness, chemical durability and environmental stability.
