Summary:
Working with university researchers, a Hungarian SME has identified the causation of lamella separation in glued laminated wooden structures. A complex technological package has been developed to tackle this problem. This package is suitable for lengthening the lifecycle of glued laminated wooden structures. Partners sought for further development and application of results in the framework of technical/ manufacturing/ commercial agreement with technical assistance/ financial support.
Description:
Founded in 1996, this Hungarian SME employs 6 engineers. The head researcher is the specialist engineer of wooden structures, with 39 years' experience.

The research topic has been chosen based on actual orders and real needs. The results are also supported by real-life data. The university research group is composed of 4 persons, consisting of highly experienced engineers from the wood industry and a PhD student and instructor of another institution. With the idea of "laboratory without walls" the best experts have been invited to participate. The present innovative development tests are carried out within university framework.

Key problem
The diagnostic examination of new structures prior to design and existing structures is of vital importance.
The causes of lamella separation are complex.
- Actual design methods do not consider external effects appropriately.
- Production and maintenance have so far not considered the problem of lamella separation, as realised by the development team.
Therefore many structures are damaged, collapsing, sometimes demolished.

A phenomenon all over Europe is that where extreme climatic stresses had not been considered during design, production and maintenance of glued laminated wooden structures, the beams had to be demolished or reinforced before expiring their time of durability.
Time of durability is set by Eurocode, building and maintenance by this technological package helps contractors to comply with this time.

1 Suggestions to avoid design and maintenance problems in connection to rain, vapour, internal air ventilation,
2 Suggestions to avoid problems in connection to production, quality control and its regulations,

4 Software package to calculate climatic and production residual stresses, superimposed with stresses from load.

The use of our software package makes the consideration of external effects during design possible. Sustainable growth aspects also require the lengthening of the structures' time of durability.

There are no specific requirements. The technological package may be implemented at a modern, general technical standard. Factory discipline and graded lamella for production, our software for design, construction of structure joints based on suggestion, and compliance with standards for maintainance are needed.

The glues and glue technologies applied may be one of the main possible development areas. Revision of technical regulations and standards (e. g. Eurocode), based on this problem, is also needed in the future.
