Un grupo de investigación andaluz especializado en bioquímica, nutrición y salud, antioxidantes, ácidos grasos, omega 3 y salud cardiovascular ha descubierto nuevos péptidos, aislados del aceite de oliva, que presentan actividad antihipertensiva. Estos péptidos son capaces de inhibir la actividad de la ECA (enzima convertidora de angiotensina) y, por lo tanto, son útiles como agentes antihipertensivos. El grupo de investigación busca compañías farmacéuticas y alimentarias o empresas especializadas en suplementos dietéticos con el fin de establecer acuerdos de licencia.

The Andalusian research group works in the fields of biochemistry, nutrition and health, antioxidants, fatty acids, omega 3 and cardiovascular health. They have discovered new peptides, isolated from olive oil, which possess anti-hypertensive activity.
Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a disease which affects approximately 40% of adults aged 25 and above. Although the causes of hypertension in most cases are unknown, the renin-angiotensin system plays an important role in the regulation of blood pressure, blood volume and vascular tone. In this system, a peptide called angiotensin I is hydrolysed by the action of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE). There are several pharmaceutical compounds on the market of which the mechanism of action is precisely the ACE inhibition. However ACE inhibitors present with undesirable side effects.
Bioactive peptides ACE inhibitors have been isolated from different sources of animal and vegetable origin.
The new peptides discovered possess anti-hypertensive activity. These peptides are able to inhibit ACE activity and therefore are useful as anti-hypertensive agents. The peptides were isolated and characterized from olive oil and by-products of the olive oil industry.
They are looking for pharmaceuticals, food ingredient companies or dietary supplement companies interested in license agreement.
