Una universidad española ha desarrollado un nuevo método basado en códigos QR para obtener información sensible mediante el uso de dispositivos móviles que permite a profesionales de emergencias acceder a esta información y actuar en el momento en que los usuarios se encuentren en una situación de riesgo o inseguridad. La plataforma permite a una institución crear un único código para cada uno de sus miembros, de manera que cada agente dispone de su propio identificador y la institución puede controlar quién accede a los datos protegidos. La fase piloto ha sido aplicada en Mallorca. El grupo de investigación busca instituciones públicas y privadas con el fin de establecer acuerdos de cooperación técnica para implementar la tecnología en los sectores de seguridad y turismo.

A Spanish University has developed a new method based on QR codes for obtaining sensitive information using mobile devices so that emergency professionals can access to this information and act when users find themselves in risk or unsafe situations. A pilot phase is being applied in Mallorca (Spain). The research group seeks public and private institutions, for a technical cooperation agreement to implement this technology in the field of security and tourism.
Description:
A researcher at a Spanish university with a broad experience in telecommunications engineering and multidisciplinary ICT applications (environmental monitoring, smart grids, smart cars, smart cities and Internet of Things, among others sectors) has developed a new method that allows emergency and safety professionals to access, at risk situations, to sensitive information of a person through mobile devices.

Currently, mobile devices with a camera are in widespread use and allow the realization of services of high added value and in the majority of cases, based on the connectivity of these devices.
On the other hand, the two-dimensional codes are used in multiple supports for the encoding of information relative, mainly, to web page addresses. So, the two-dimensional codes allow obtaining digital information through the use of the camera of the mobile phones.

In emergency situations, there are actions and decisions that depend on the information available from the manager of the situation. Access to sensitive information is protected by the data protection law. In these cases, the owner of this sensitive data can´t provide the data to emergency agents because they are unconscious, because they are under age or because they don´t know the language.

With this innovative method, it is proposed to emergency and safety professionals to use their mobile devices with a camera (previously authorized) in emergency or insecure situations through the treatment of encrypted two-dimensional codes that contain protected information.

Ultimately, the method of obtaining sensitive information comprises:

· Capture, using the camera, a two-dimensional code that contains unencrypted public information and encrypted sensitive information
· Obtain binary information from the two-dimensional code
· Obtain public information from the two-dimensional code
· Make symmetric decryption of part of the information that corresponds to sensitive information that the user has wanted to protect.

The University is interested in carrying out a technical cooperation agreement to implement the technology, with private companies working in the tourism sector and also with public institutions that may be interested in the improvement of safety and security in tourism destinations.
Advantages and Innovations:
The platform allows the institution to create a unique code for each of its members, so that each agent will have its own code identifier and the institution can control who accesses to the protected data.

In addition, the identification codes have a validity period and, once expired, it is not possible to access to the information again.
