Esta plataforma modular y escalable puede adaptarse fácilmente a una amplia variedad de mercados verticales. Cada vehículo está compuesto por una plataforma modular autopropulsada y una súper estructura adaptable. Los vehículos pueden conectarse como un tren, donde el vehículo delantero actúa como vehículo conductor. El tren completo se dirige con un algoritmo de control que coordina la tracción de todas las ruedas. La empresa busca socios industriales y licenciatarios en todo el mundo con el fin de lanzar la tecnología al mercado.


Disruptive light-weight semi autonomous electric vehicle platform
A Belgian technology SME has developed a disruptive lightweight electric vehicle platform (international patent published). Modular and scalable it can be easily adapted to a wide range of vertical markets. In order to bring it to the market, the company seeks investing industrial partners and licensees, across Europe and Worldwide.
The envisaged solution for urban mobility is a novel type of lightweight modular and scalable electric vehicles in the L category targeting urban environments. A wide range of vehicle configurations were developed during the market survey amongst potential customers. Some of these vehicle configurations represent completely new offerings on the market. This wide range of configurations is only possible through the disruptive architecture that essentially rethinks the very concept of an electric vehicle by fully exploiting the capabilities offered by going electric. The modular propulsion platform consists of easy to manufacture sub-assemblies in aluminium. These combine into a platform of various sizes from where we address a wider range of user needs in a cost-efficient and rapid way, while achieving volume benefits that can´t be reached with the classical monolithic designs. The redundant drive and steer by wire control system as well as the remote monitoring and manoeuvring capability provide for a very compact but also very safe vehicle that is already prepared for future autonomous driving modes.
Every vehicle is composed of a self-propelled modular platform and a customisable super structure.
1. The self-propelled platform is typically composed of modular units containing a wheel with hub motor, a suspension unit, a battery with associated super capacitors and battery management system, a vehicle controller and a motor controller. Each of these units provides energy and propulsion, translated into traction on the wheel, which lead to the name self-propelled.
2. The super structure sits on top of the self-propelled modular platform (standardised) and can very easily be customised for each application scenario (cargo, passengers, utility). The superstructure can also be designed to allow lower step-up height for people or lower lift-up for pallets. People and goods superstructures can be switched during operation.

The vehicles can be connected like a "train". The front vehicle typically will be a driver or tractor vehicle. The whole vehicle train is steered by a control algorithm that steers the vehicle as a whole by "coordinating" the traction on all the wheels. As each wheel adds propulsion power and steering capability, the resulting system is fault tolerant but also adds range capacity when the load increases. Passive vehicles can be pulled as well.
Each propulsion unit and each vehicle is remotely monitored. Each vehicle can be remotely manoeuvred.
Based on one-to-one interviews with potential customers, it was decided to focus on a range of vehicle modules that meet the desired specifications:
1. Possibility to use on bicycle pathways (hence an S version with width < 90 cm).
2. Full day range or typically 60 to 80 km given 60 stops (max. 200 km, no stops on a flat terrain)
3. Cargo weight up to 1500 kg (provided in trailers of 150 kg) for the small version, resp. 3000 kg for the larger version (in trailers of 300 kg) and up to 150 kg for the smallest vehicle version.
4. Cargo volume up to 15 m3 (in units of 1.5 m3 cargo vehicles for the S version) resp. 30 m3 for the M version (in units of 3 m3 ) by connecting them as a train.
5. Capability to transport euro-pallets (80 x 120 cm)
6. Capabilities to load the cargo while the batteries are being charged.
7. Capability to change the super structure during operation (e.g. people in the morning, cargo in the afternoon).
8. Capability to attach cargo units (up to 10 cargo vehicles, controllable from a smart phone).
9. Remote monitoring and communication.
10. Semi-autonomous driving (implemented as "drive by web").
Advantages and Innovations:
The vehicle concept addresses many issues that limit the introduction of lightweight electric, especially for urban environments (L6/7 category). The modular and scalable architecture allows adapting the vehicle´s superstructure to a wide range of vertical application markets. The smallest vehicle can be classified as an e-trike, the largest one as a compact 4-wheel vehicle for transporting people and goods. Application markets include hospitals, warehouses, tourism, public transport, city-logistics, and many more.
Specific advantages are: affordable production cost at low volumes, reliability, low empty weight (typically 3 to 4 times less than the allowable gross weight, recyclable (by using alumininium), compactness (by using a novel type of suspension), versatility.
The vehicle can be equipped with different types of batteries but is typically configured to operate a full day while being charged at a standard power outlet when parked or overnight. The standard configuration is 4x4 steer by wire and using a redundant control architecture.
The vehicle is remotely monitored and can be remotely steered using a smartphone or tablet. Remote steering using a camera has been demonstrated over the web.
Status: a first production prototype was assembled and demonstrated. Multiple vertical market configurations are being discussed with potential customers. Early production of various vehicle configurations are planned for 2016 with full production and marketing in 2017.
