Description:
A research group working in life sciences at a prestigious Spanish Hospital have developed a capillary slide for microscope that allows cell culture and cell examination in microscopes.
In life sciences cell culture is mainly done in Roux bottles. Cells are covered with a liquid as well as an air layer permitting gas exchange. The conventional vertical microscopes do not have a sufficient working distance in order to examine cell cultures inside the Roux bottle. Therefore bottle examination requires an inverted (looking up) low augment microscope. Also, current microbiology and parasitological procedures are complicated, they have a significant costs and risk of sample and technician contamination.
The device consist of a microscope slide with a closed internal space, examination chamber, for examination and cell cultures, and a loading chamber that can be accessed by removing the cap. The examination chambers´ central shaft is open from both ends in order to facilitate filling of the capillary slide.
The capillary slide can be made of polystyrene or glass and polystyrene; the cap can be made of polypropylene, silicone or rubber. The proposed size of the standard capillary slide is 25x75mm; while for some used 12.5x75 mm would be preferred. The device size can be suited to customer needs. The interior chamber cover has a thickness of 0.15 ± 0.03 mm and the examination camera depth ranges from 0.01 mm to 2 mm. The standard size permits the use of conventional vertical microscope for analysis.
This new device minimized resources used (utensils, volume of the culture and of reactive agents) and the risk of contamination (protecting simultaneously sample and user), because microscopic examination can be repeatedly performed without opening the container.
Capillary slide has a global market potential and it can replace the Roux bottle in many applications. It is applicable in all life sciences using cell cultures; for example virology, microbiology, mycology, parasitology, entomology, immunology, genetics, plant cell, tissue and organ culture, etc.
Initially, they are looking for companies working in production and distribution of medical supplies interested in bringing the microscope slide to the market with an initial license agreement. Other agreements could be study if proposed after first contact.
