The invention developed by a research group of an Italian University relates to a new process for the preparation of cyclic or linear organic carbonate derivatives by a reaction of trans carbonation. The process is innovative, simple, versatile and effective. It can be developed at an industrial scale. Applications of organic carbonates range widely. They are used, for example, in the field of eco-solvent, in the production of fuel additives, as intermediates in the synthesis of drugs, lubricants, and monomers and polymers (polycarbonates and polyurethanes) of wider use. Companies in such fields are sought for patent license or ownership transfer agreements. The university research group is also interested to reach technical cooperation agreements to further develop specific applications of interest for the industrial partners.
Advantages and Innovations:
The core of this invention is a new route for the preparation of carbonates that makes the whole process simpler and less costly. Indeed, following the new route, synthesis occurs using milder reaction conditions (in terms of temperatures, reaction times and interaction between reactants) and rather homogeneous catalysis conditions compared to other methods, which results in limiting the costs and the production of waste in the overall process.

Furthermore, this innovative procedure, by using green reagents and intermediates, overcomes the problems posed by the high toxicity or hazardous nature of the reagents, which are instead present in the most commonly used methods for the synthesis of organic carbonates.
