Description:
An Italian company, born as a university spin-off in the Emilia-Romagna region, is devoted to research and development and active in the field of green biotechnology, in particular plants biotechnology. It was created in 2014 by scientists and also experts in business and finance. The company is specialised in research and development of innovative processes to:
- increase the sustainability of agricultural and farming activities
- improve quality and offer of natural ingredients and products for the nutraceutics, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals markets.

The innovation starts from the combination of two productive fields, currently independent:
- micro algae production (to produce biomass)
- hydrolytic enzymes (which split molecules using water helping anaerobic digestion) and cellulolytic enzymes in tobacco plants (which attack cellulose and provoke its degradation).
The use of these enzymes cooperates to increase micro algae production and the suitability of biomass for biodigestion in biogas plants. Their combined action allows to elaborate bio-based products and protocols for farms and agriculture. The process was tested in the university laboratory during a three-year experimental test.

*Examples of applications:
1) Technology treatment for the abatement of nitrogen content in animal manure using micro algae. The treated manure is then used in biodigester whose activity is helped by hydrolytic enzymes to increase its sustainability (valorization of waste or production of fuel, energy).
The company´s idea of a manure treatment technology is based on farmers´ need to respond to current laws that limit the spreading of manure containing nitrogen. The treatment proposed allows to reduce nitrogen content by 90%. Local production of enzymes is also environmental friendly because of its low impact and reduced transport costs.

2) Valorizazion of organic waste from agriculture to obtain microalgal biomass: the use of hydrolytic enzymes increases micro algae production and allows to transform agro-food waste and cellulolytic enzymes into sugars for the growth of micro algae.

3) Development of dietary supplements for animal feed from products created and biomass

4) Development of ingredients for organic agriculture.

The technology allows an easy scale-up of production and at the same time a precise production of enzymes. The use of enzymes instead of chemical products makes the process more sustainable and non pollutant. It uses natural sources of accelerators for biomass digestion to use in biomass, i.e. the cycle is highly sustainable and aims at reusing waste.

The company is looking for industrial partners in the fields of farming, nutraceutics, biogas and bioenergy (as well as textile and paper industry for related applications).
Partners should study together the technology and its market application; customize plant units and final products to required needs, apply the technology and sharing results. Services agreement, research or technical cooperation agreement could be envisaged.

- the technology is based on more than twenty years of progresses in the development of micro algae technologies at the company´s university, progresses regarding the identification of enzymatic conversion paths to release the energy content of cellulosic biomass.
