Description:
Currently, processes of compound extrusion are used, for example, to increase the stiffness of components by combining different materials. However in comparison to conventional extrusion processes, they are more complicated regarding the tool design and often need another step in the fabrication process to achieve the end product. For instance, additional heating and cooling equipments or processes are needed. The innovation is developed by a well know German university wih a broad range of scientific fields. The involved insitutes deals with materials science.
The university offers a procedure as well as a device for the production of compound profiles consisting of non-ferrous metal and additional material combinations (for example, aluminium-magnesium-foam for vehicle construction) by using extrusion presses in the area of light construction.They are looking for industrial partners in the field of extrusion of light materials, for example a manufacturer of tooling equiptment. In this context the univesity offers a license agreement. However, other ways of cooperation, e.g, further development, testing, are in also possible.
Advantages and Innovations:
In contrast to the state of the art, the heat which emerges during the deformation process is directed and can be used, for example, to solder or foam the additional materials and/or to pass on without further tempering. Thus, compound profiles with form-fit and bonded connections can be produced in one process action. The process parameters are designed in a way that critical temperatures, such as the solidus temperature of low melting phases of the structure-generating material, cannot be exceeded. Hence, hot-cracking, for instance, can be prevented.
