Un equipo de investigación español de una fundación biomédica ha desarrollado una prueba de diagnóstico para determinar el riesgo de caries. La prueba predice, mediante una simple muestra de saliva y una fiabilidad del 98%, el riesgo de desarrollar caries de un individuo y su causa. La prueba mide varios compuestos de una muestra de saliva recogida en un momento específico durante la formación de placa. Gracias a la medición de diferentes biomarcadores, la prueba permite aplicar un tratamiento preventivo personalizado. La fundación busca empresas interesadas en establecer acuerdos de cooperación técnica y licencia para la explotación comercial.


Caries risk diagnostic test using metabolic and immune salivary analysis
A Spanish research group from a biomedical foundation has developed a diagnostic test to determine the risk of caries. The test predicts, with a simple saliva sample and a reliability of 98%, the risk of each person for developing caries and the cause of it. By measuring different biomarkers, the test allows applying a preventive personalized treatment. The foundation is looking for companies interested on technical cooperation agreement and/or license agreement for commercial exploitation
Dental caries remain the most widespread infectious disease in the world. Current caries diagnostic tests based on bacterial components are quite limited, as they only measure the amount of Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus bacteria in saliva. These tests have little predictive value because there are dozens of microbial agents involved in the formation of caries, not only these two. Furthermore, pH tests measure the ability of the saliva to regulate the acid, but it has been shown that this is only one of the factors that affect caries.
The diagnostic test developed for this Spanish research group, involves the measurement of various compounds from a saliva sample collected at a specific time during the formation of plaque. The test provides information caries risk of the individual and the source of that risk, providing the opportunity for a personalized treatment.
The research group has determined the range of values, from up to 25 compounds, in saliva samples of adult individuals with and without dental caries. Six of these compounds have shown a great diagnostic value. These 6 compounds may be used as "biomarkers" for caries disease: two of them would refer to immune competence, two to the adhesiveness of microorganisms, and two for the ability to neutralize acids or dampen pH changes. Deviations in the normal, reference values measured by the SIMMA (Salivary Immune and Metabolic Marker Analysis) test indicates the dentist which hygiene product or dental treatment is appropriate for the patient, based on the biological origin of the risk of caries (immune, pH, or adhesion microorganisms). SIMMA test opens the possibility to develop three oral hygiene products adapted to the characteristics of each patient.
The research group is seeking companies from the oral health sector or clinical diagnosis, for technical cooperation and/or license agreement in order commercialize this technology via transformation of this diagnostic test in a diagnostic kit easy to use in dental clinics, or developing oral hygiene products tailored to test results.
Advantages and Innovations:
· The test allows a personalized preventive treatment to each individual and to prevent the risk caries before it appears
The test determines the risk of developing caries and the biological origin of it. If there is immune imbalance, tendency to adhesion of cariogenic organisms, and ability to neutralize acids.
· Higher accuracy than previous tests on the market for the caries risk, due to the combination of different biomarkers. The test uses a simple saliva sample and has a reliability of 98%.
· The only test offering a measurable outcome, indicating the percentage of a person´s risk of developing caries.
· The test opens the possibility to design an oral care line of products specifically adapted to the test outcome that could be used as a tooth decay preventive treatment.
· With additional research efforts, the diagnostic test could be used to develop a genetic test to relate the DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) mutations that predispose caries, regardless of the possible mutations that at the same time can counteract this effect.
