Description:
The primary focus of the German SME is in the field of nanotechnology with a focus on the development of intelligent polyelectrolyte surfaces and capsules. The key technology is the Layer-by-Layer (LbL) technology, which means the alternating deposition of oppositely charged polymers or nanoparticles on colloidal or planar surfaces. The outcome is a several nanometre thick film which enables a fine-tuning of the surface properties such as charge, roughness, hydrophobicity, elasticity etc. This LbL film enables a combination of functional materials such as drugs, biomolecules, imaging tracer molecules or nanoparticles with natural or engineered surfaces. The target surface to be modified can be colloidal particles, channels of microfluidic devices, several square meter plates and in principle any charged surface. Furthermore, LbL technology can be used to produce polymer based hollow capsules which are amazing drug delivery vehicles as they allow a pH, temperature, light etc. triggered drug release. Comprehensive experience in development of advanced coating and layering methods, such as selective Sol-Gel procedures in LbL layers or the manufacture of linked polyvinyl alcohol capsules in combination with an extensive know-how in the production of functionalised micro- and nanoparticles of different polymers with narrow size distributions offer a broad spectrum of possible customised solution approaches.
Cooperation partners can use the technology on the basis of a licence agreement or they can jointly develop new surfaces on the basis of a research agreement. The German SME also offers the opportunity to manufacture the surfaces on the basis of a manufacturing agreement.
Advantages and Innovations:
Through the use of nanometre thick polymer/particle films, it is possible to tailor the physical properties of almost any surface. Controllable surface properties include hydrophilicity/-phobicity, roughness, surface charge and permeability. Following coating, some of these properties such as permeability can be reversibly adjusted via pH, temperature, light, etc. enabling for example smart, target-specific drug delivery capsules. Whether as a substrate or as part of a surface layer, the custom-fit micro- and nanoparticle systems provide another building block for uniquely innovative developments.

Development schemes are organised around a feasibility study, which, in larger projects, is detailed by clearly defined milestones, product optimisation and the transfer into the production process. Depending on the size of the approach, the product can be manufactured by the company. The company manufactures at a scale of several kilograms or a pilot installation.
