UK-based SME offers its novel technology for reducing production costs for insoluble fermentation products to companies under a licensing agreement or technical cooperation
Summary:
A UK-based SME has developed a technology that enables insoluble lipids, in particular biosurfactants, to be recovered continuously during fermentation processes reducing production costs. The SME is offering this technology to companies that produce or use insoluble fermentation products, in particular biosurfactants. It is envisaged that the partnership will take the form of a licensing agreement or a technical cooperation agreement where appropriate.
Description:
Lipids produced by fermentation, in particular biosurfactants, have a range of uses including in the production of personal care products. They are produced by yeast or bacterial fermentation with the lipids being recovered from the fermentation broth at the end of a batch. However, this process can be inefficient resulting in higher costs that hamper the use of biolipids for large scale application.

A UK-based SME, a spin-out from a university, has developed a technology that can enable the more efficient production of insoluble fermentation products. This is achieved through a new method that enables these products to be recovered from the fermentation broth as they are produced, reducing mass transfer difficulties and so enabling increased productivity.

This technology has been demonstrated at pilot scale with three industrial collaborators and the company is now looking to license the technology to companies that use relevant products such as sophorolipids or other lipid bioproducts in their own product ranges for incorporation of the technology into their production lines. The SME is also looking to work with companies to further develop the technology for enhanced production processes for a variety of insoluble fermentation products. It is envisaged that the partnership will take the form of a licensing agreement or a technical cooperation agreement where appropriate.
Advantages and Innovations:
The SME´s technology had the following advantages:

Reduces production costs for insoluble fermentation products by >40%, verified by their industrial collaborator.

Increases productivity by reducing mass transfer difficulties. For their first process, for biosurfactant production, they reached 2-3 times state of the art productivities and 2 x the titer, at >5 g/l/h productivities and >800 g/l.
Stage of Development:
Available for demonstration
IPs:
Patent(s) applied for but not yet granted

Partner sought

Type and Role of Partner Sought:
The SME is looking to partner with companies, small and large, that either produce or use insoluble fermentation products, particularly biosurfactants. The SME would provide their technology to partners to incorporate into their production lines. The SME would look to receive feedback from partner companies on the performance of the technology in their process lines to aid the SME in further technology development. It is envisaged that the partnership will take the form of a licensing agreement, although technical cooperation agreements will also be considered if appropriate and beneficial to both parties.
