A German company offers a technology to extract phosphates from biomass/sewage sludge by using an innovative, worldwide unique and patented method. The unique phosphate extraction process allows to excite renewable power as thermal energy or electricity that can be fed into the national grid.

Phosphate is an essential element for all creatures and a driving force for the metabolism of all living cells. Especially for plant nutrition in form of fertilizers, phosphate plays a significant role. Moreover phosphate is a substantial component for bone substance and also comprised in sewage sludge.

According to notable international research institutes best estimates, the natural reserves of phosphate will be exhausted within 100 to 300 years. Hence, the recycling of phosphate will be the one and only way to secure the enduring provision of this essential element. Soluble biomass phosphates bound in bones, bone meal, carcass meal and waste water sludge represent in many areas of the world a significant phosphate resource.

The German company extracts phosphates from biomass with a special redox process: Pyrolysis (reductive) combined with subsequent thermal post-combustion (oxidative) converts phosphate-containing biomasses into highly concentrated, extremely pure mineral phosphates.

The redox-method of the German company is an innovative and worldwide unique method During the redox process a complete segmentation of the biomass into thermal energy and a mineral residue (the recycled raw phosphate) takes place. The minerals residue is composed of calcium carbonates and oxides as well as highly concentrated and chemically pure calcium phosphates. As a side product, the redox process also generates large amounts of CO2-neutral energy. The utilisation of CO2- neutral energy can vary from electricity generation over deployment for drying to drinking water purification.
