An East of England company has over thirty years experience in building secure private networks for critical applications. In addition to cyber threats, it has overcome many other challenges in this business. For example, in the water industry the assets are buried or difficult to access otherwise, they are remote and also expensive to access.

It has emerged over the past few years that the Internet of Things (IoT) evolves at a much slower rate than anyone expected. A big part of the problem is the recurring theme of security breaches. Most manufacturers continue to claim that they have resolved issues, then over events occur.

The problem lies with the immaturity in terms of market segmentation. The IoT is not one thing that suits absolutely everyone. For example, in segments such as critical infrastructure, it should not be pushed.

Critical assets, defined by the EU, include water, gas and electricity supply, sanitation, pollution, telecommunications, railways, roads and healthcare related operations. Often they are interdependent. The water industry should not be subjected to security holes by the electricity and telecommunications providers.Cellular networks and the Internet must be avoided when protecting and monitoring critical assets. Licensed radio needs to be used for communications.

The company has robust solutions for the right kind of data, coming from the right place at the right time. A critical network has been installed with a large water industry in the UK that sends >200M messages a year. Picture 2 shows a segment of a network tackling floods.

Such a private network is not necessarily expensive. Picture 1 depicts a sample of building blocks for said systems, developed in-house or bought off the shelf.

The company is seeking enquiries from the departments in utilities, grids, and governments responsible for running or protecting critical assets. Upon a brief non-confidential description of the situation the company will draw on past examples of similar cases, with a view to design and install critical networks jointly. The type of cooperation is likely to be a licensing agreement to the target organisations the company contracts with.
