Description:
A German research institute at a university of applied science has expertise in automation, machine learning (AI - Artificial Intelligence) and thermochemical and biochemical conversion of organic waste for energy recovery.
The would like to join a consortium for a project on food loss and waste prevention and reduction. Specifically to the proposed research project they would like to contribute their expertise in identification and quantification of different organic waste (including food waste) using machine learning and image recognition. They have developed image recognition system including both software and hardware which can recognize different categories of organic waste e.g. food, grass, garden cuttings, leaves, contaminant plastics etc. in the waste collected from the household brown bins. This system can reliably identify and quantify the food waste at the end point of food supply chain.

The proposed research work would be carried out at a unique research institute which is located at a former landfill site decommissioned in 2005. However, this site still treats different kinds of wastes including organic waste (including household food) collected from the brown bins from a close-by municipality. Biowaste is treated using composting and an 1.1 MWelectric biogas plant. This research site will provide an open access to the OFMSW (Organic Fraction of Municipal Waste) and to industrial experts which have years of experience in handling organic waste.
Within the project food waste data would be collected and measured.

Partners are sought for a research cooperation agreement. The university of applied sciences would like to join a consortium to work on prevention and reduction of food waste within the call HORIZON-CL6-2022-FARM2FORK-01-09. The consortium should be composed of different players along the food value chain. The university would bring in their interdisciplinary know-how and research site.
