Ultra-nano-crystalline diamond (UNCD) thin film coatings for medical implants and biosensors
An Austrian company offers special ultrananocrystalline diamond (UNCD) coatings for applications in wear resistance, implantology and biosensors. Main advantages are smooth diamond films with low coefficient of friction (CoF), biocompatibility and highest stability, bringing extraordinary properties of natural diamond to coated materials. The Austrian SME is seeking partners for technical cooperation agreement, commercial cooperation agreement with technical assistance or financial agreement.
A team of physicists and engineers in close collaboration with universities and research organisations developed a novel ultrananocrystalline diamond (UNCD) technology and transferred the process, patents and their expertise in the field of diamond technology into an Austrian company. The SME was founded in 2013 with the aim of developing and commercialising the UNCD technology for new innovative implants and sensing applications.

The company produces ultrananocrystalline diamond coatings in a unique, in-house-developed chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technology applying Industry 4.0 concepts. Products are under approval for European (CE) and U.S. (FDA) market for titanium/ceramic implants (dental, abutments). New products for biosensors/wearables are under development. The company has implemented a quality management system according DIN ISO 13485 and will be certified by the beginning of 2017. Equipment for film characterisation, chemistry lab, optical microscopy is available in-house, further methods of analysis are accessible via external partners.

Based on the unique UNCD-deposition method, particular properties in comparison to state-of-the-art nanocrystalline diamond thin films are achieved:
- high purity and sp-3 content (> 98%).
- grain size of approx. 5 nm resulting in very smooth surfaces
- excellent adhesion with substrates like titanium, silicon, ceramics, tungsten carbide, quartz.

These properties lead to advantages, which are fundamental for new applications. The company offers tailored UNCD-films for collaboration in development of new products and is able to scale up for reliable small-batch production.

Potential applications are in the field of:
- customized implant surface improving cell adhesion, soft tissue attachment or growth of bone or
- robust sensors with highest sensitivity based on electro-chemical, mechanical (SAW (Simple Additive Weighting)/cantilever), thermal or electrical (impedance) methods.

Traditional materials (e.g. silicon, silver, gold, etc.) for these applications (so called "transducer" material) are not totally suitable due to missing biocompatibility, high sensitivity and long-term stability. UNCD can be a viable alternative and be applied for early diagnostics of diseases, proteomics/metabolomics, online-monitoring of pharmaceuticals, wellness/fitness, sensors in food industry or toxic/hazardous analyses in homeland-security or environment.

The SME and their founders provide long-term expertise obtained in national and international research projects. This knowledge will be offered addressing new developments of applications in markets where unmet requirements exist.

In general: exploitation of UNCD for partner´s products achieving innovation for joint production (or commercialisation/licencing) is a major goal. In addition, development for a combination of implants and sensors or internet of things (watches, mobile phone, etc.) with UNCD-sensors is challenging and collaboration/strategic partners are sought for technical cooperation agreements, commercial agreements with technical assistance or financial agreement. Possible cooperation partners could be from industry or research and active in the field of medical implants, sensors or wearable technologies.
Advantages and Innovations:
The main advantages of the particular UNCD coatings are based on the high quality and purity of the film and the small grain sizes in the range of 5 nm. These properties lead to advantages in:
1) implantology/tissue engineering like:
-significantly increased active surface area for improved cell interaction and accelerated
soft tissue or bone healing
-stable/simple surface functionalisation to render the material:
-hydrophilic or hydrophobic in whole or patterned
-to selectively bind biomolecules without influencing their bioactivity
-improve antibacterial properties
-high chemical resistance: corrosion protection of the substrate (e.g. titanium) and thus prevent diffusion of metal ions into the living organism
-smooth surface and low friction coefficient result in improved tribology
2) sensing applications like:
-wide electro-chemical window (4 V)
-high selectivity due to large active surface (nano structure)
-high sensitivity, depending on type of detection: low back-ground signal (e.g. ISFET), high resonance frequency (GHz, e.g. SAW, cantilever).
-robust, long-term stability (chemical, environment)

Partner sought

Type and Role of Partner Sought:
Partners are sought for joint product development or/and commercialisation of the novel UNCD-based prototypes/surfaces. Focus should be on synergies between all partners. Thus, strategic partnerships are of most interest. Partners from industry as well as collaboration with research organisation are welcome.
Specific area of activities of the partners should be related to

- Manufacturing and distribution of implants/abutments for dental applications. Substrate material should be titanium or ceramics. The needed/expected tasks of the partner can be described as follows: industrial partners in market segment of dental applications with established distribution channels and market acceptance bringing new, innovative UNCD implant surfaces to the market (with clearly defined, customized surfaces to improve/accelerate bone healing, soft tissue attachment (abutments) by means of nanotechnology and carbon-based coatings).

- Manufacturing (bio)sensors for fast/real-time detection of small analyses (e.g. for diagnostics, wellness/fitness, food, homeland-security). The needed/expected tasks of the partner can be described as follows: industrial and research organisation with infrastructure for generation of sensors will support final development and optimization of UNCD-based sensors (based on different methods: Ion Sensitive Field Effect Transistor (ISFET), nano-gap/DNA, Simple Additive Weighting (SAW), cantilever, MEMS). The partners should wish to improve/innovate their marketable products. Distribution and joint commercialisation is expected.

- Manufacturer of smart watches, smart phones, etc. for combination with diamond-based sensors for commercialisation of novel wearable technology. The needed/expected tasks of the partner can be described as follows: industrial partners in this market segment with established distribution channels and market acceptance should commercialise new, innovative UNCD-based sensors/wearables.

Possible cooperation with the above mentioned partner types could be addressed through technical agreements, financial agreement or commercial agreements with technical assistance.
