Advanced organic-inorganic hybrid coatings.
Summary:
An Italian university research group working in the new materials sector, has developed advanced organic-inorganic hybrid coatings which possess considerable adhesive properties on various materials, such as glass, polycarbonate, polyurethane and metals, making them suitable for the realization of multifunctional coatings in different industrial sectors. Partners sought are companies interested in a technical cooperation agreement for the adaptation of the technology to specific needs.
Description:
The proposed technology, based on organic-inorganic hybrid coatings, has been developed by an Italian university research group active in new materials field.

Organic-inorganic hybrid materials are becoming increasingly popular as raw materials due to their considerable properties. This type of materials join the properties typical of silicone materials, such as wear, scratch and chemical resistance, together with the typical features of organic resins, like flexibility and toughness.
Moreover material properties can be without difficulty tailored modulating the structure of the main siloxane backbone and the organic fraction constituting the lateral chains. Further performances, like hydrophobicity, anti-soiling and anti-graffiti properties, can be conferred to the material by introducing specific lateral organic chains.
The presence of free Hydroxide (OH-) anchorage groups on the main siloxane backbone leads to a strong adhesion on several materials such as glass, polycarbonate, polyurethane, and metals.
These considerable adhesive properties make hybrids materials ideal for the realization of multifunctional coatings in several industrial domains. In this respect, the introduction of anti-sticking agents on the lateral chains of the silicone backbone can especially lead to the formation of surface coatings with very low surface friction, which can easily act as a release layer. This property is particularly useful all the time an easy-to-clean and hard-to-soil surface should be encompassed.

Within the framework of technical cooperation, the researchers are looking for companies interested in decorative and/or functional applications of the proposed technology.
Advantages and Innovations:
The coatings combine the typical properties of silicone materials, such as wear, scratch and chemical resistance together, with the features of organic resins such as flexibility and toughness.
Further performances, in particular hydrophobicity, anti-soiling and anti-graffiti properties, can be conferred to the materials by introducing specific lateral organic chains.
The introduction of anti-sticking agents on the lateral chains of the silicone backbone can lead to the formation of surface coatings with very low surface friction, which can easily act as a release layer. This property is especially functional when an easy-to-clean and hard-to-soil surface should be encompassed.

Partner sought

Type and Role of Partner Sought:
The research group is looking for companies interested in decorative applications of the proposed coating. In particular, those companies active in automotive, furniture manufacture, wall covering and flooring that are looking for transparent protective coatings, transparent protective bulk materials and additives for decorative coatings.
Regarding the functional applications such as scratch and wear resistant coatings, anti-soiling and anti-graffiti coating, anti-corrosion coatings and super-hydrophobic coatings, the partners sought are companies operating in automotive and photovoltaic sectors.

The partnership proposed is a technical cooperation agreement between parties to adapt the technology to meet the partner needs using the expertise of the developer.
