Tres centros de investigación españoles han desarrollado un sensor de nanopartículas capaz de detectar partículas que no superen cierto tamaño en emisiones de gas. Este sensor puede emplearse para medir la concentración de partículas en línea en emisiones industriales, evaluar el deterioro progresivo de filtros de partículas o determinar la distribución del tamaño de partículas en aerosoles. La tecnología consiste en un sensor analizador de movilidad integral que funciona a una tensión fija (campo eléctrico constante) en combinación con un electrómetro capaz de medir la concentración de nanopartículas con movilidad eléctrica por encima de un valor seleccionado. Se buscan socios industriales en las industrias de sensores o nanopartículas con el fin de establecer acuerdos de licencia.

Summary:
Three Spanish Research Institutions have developed a nanoparticle sensor capable of detecting particles under a certain size in gas emissions. It can be used to measure particles´ concentration in line at industrial emissions, evaluate progressive decline of particle filters or determine particle size distribution in aerosols. Industrial partners from the sensor or nanoparticle industries are being sought to collaborate through a licence agreement.
Description:
Within industrial emission, control of nanoparticle emissions to the atmosphere is particularly important because these particles accumulate in the highest proportion the toxic compounds present in gas emission. Taking care of this problem is necessary due to nanoparticle´s ability to easily penetrate and settle in lungs, among other problems. Nowadays for the detection and measurement of nanoparticled aerosols Differential Mobility Analysers (DMA) are used. However, these devices are quite expensive and delicate and their use requires previous scientific and technical knowledge.
The developed technology consists in an integral mobility analyser sensor working at fixed voltage (meaning constant electric field) in combination with an electrometer, capable of measuring the concentration of nanoparticles with electrical mobility higher than a selected value. Due to the relationship between electrical mobility and size, nanoparticles under a given diameter (cut-off diameter) will be detected. Such diameter depends on to the voltage used, so it can be easily modified just changing the electric field employed.
In a single measurement, the whole concentration of nanoparticles under a certain size can be determined. However, a DMA would have to make the determination of the complete size distribution. The nanoparticle sensor can be used to measure in line the numerical concentration of particles smaller than a fixed value at industrial gas emissions, evaluate progressive decline of particle filters or determine particle size distribution in aerosols among other applications. Therefore, industrial partners who work in related topics, such as sensors, environmental control, aerosols, nanoparticle filters, among others, are being sought for patent licensing, technology development and commercialization.

¿ The elements of the sensor can be placed in a compact way inside a metallic box, buffered by anti-vibratory elements and easy to transport (light weight).
¿ The sensor gives, in real time and continuous mode, the concentration of particles under a certain diameter with mobility lower than the cut-off diameter.
¿ Particle size can be selected by the user, simply selecting the convenient electric field.
¿ The device is robust, its manufacture is cheap and it can be used by any worker with basic knowledge about measuring in line at industrial processes.
