Un centro tecnológico catalán con experiencia en desarrollo de sensores ha diseñado un nuevo sensor óptico para detectar el hielo que se forma en una superficie. Este sensor es capaz de detectar hielo en la fase temprana de nucleación con una sensibilidad micrométrica y puede aplicarse en distintos campos, como aeronáutica, aerogeneradores o industria naval. El sensor tiene un tamaño lo suficientemente pequeño para poder instalarse en cualquier superficie, no necesita presencia de aire y detecta la formación de hielo sin movimiento. Se buscan empresas con el fin de establecer acuerdos de licencia, cooperación o comercialización con asistencia técnica.

Summary:
A Catalonian technological centre with high expertise in sensor development has developed an innovative and new optical sensor for detecting ice appearing on a surface. This sensor is able to detect the ice in early stages of nucleation with micrometric sensitivity. It can be applied in various fields such as the aeronautical industry, wind turbines or the shipbuilding industry. Companies for technical cooperation, license and/or commercial agreement with technical assistance are sought.
Description:
This sensor with a small size and low consumption is based on a confined light propagation in a micrometre size waveguide at any area close to the surface where it should detect the ice. The waveguide allows that when the weather or thermodynamic conditions of the environment induce icing on a surface, then an abrupt increase in radiation losses of the guide is detected. This change in the transmitted optical signal is detected and transmitted immediately to a sensor generating an automatic signal to activate the anti-icing system or to activate an alarm to indicate icing.

This sensor is able to detect icing. It is sufficiently small to be able to be installed on any surface and it detects icing when its thickness does not exceed few microns. For this reason, the sensor has a micrometric sensitivity and high precision.

· The sensor does not need the presence of air flow, and it can detect icing without movement.
· The sensor allows the generation of an ice map if sensors are installed in array.
