A Catalan SME has developed an L-band microwave radiometer sensor to measure soil moisture by remote sensing. The sensor provides data without requiring infrastructure in very high resolution. It is used in on-board aircrafts, unmanned aerials systems and ground vehicles. It can be used for soil mapping, irrigation management and flood prevention. The SME is looking for partners interested in a research cooperation, technical cooperation or a commercial agreement with technical assistance.
Description:
Soil moisture measurements are essential in agriculture applications. An efficient management of the irrigation systems increases the yield of the field production optimizing the water and energy consumption.

Most of the current existing technologies to measure soil moisture are invasive sensor technologies that could affect the terrain and need to be removed when the field must be ploughed or worked.

A Catalan SME with experience in research and development activities in the field of microwave remote sensing devices has developed a non-invasive technology to measure soil moisture based on the existing technology used in Microwave Imaging Radiometer with Aperture Synthesis (MIRAS) sensor on-board Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) satellite mission. SMOS provides soil moisture data at 50 km pixel. SMOS resolution is too low to have practical agriculture and flood prevention applications.

The technology developed by the Catalan SME consist of an L-band microwave radiometer sensor that provide soil moisture data at 1 m pixel resolution offering irrigation managers and designers valuable information not available before.

The developed sensor is used in on-board aircrafts, unmanned aerials systems and ground vehicles providing high density soil moisture data without requiring infrastructure. The collection of soil moisture data is possible even over difficult terrain and high variance areas.

This technology allows measuring soil moisture, distinguishing between salt and fresh water, measuring asphalt density as well as for the inspection of dikes and levees to look for water leakages.

The technology can be applied in the field of precision agriculture, irrigation management and flood management.

The Catalan SME is looking for industrial partners interested in technical cooperation agreement to adapt the technology to specific needs or to further develop and industrialise this technology.

A research cooperation agreement with the aim of identifying new applications could be also considered.

The Catalan SME is also interested in a commercial agreement with technical assistance where technical advice in the use of the sensor as well as maintenance would be provided.
