Plastic foils, films or other thin items with large surface areas often cause blockages and other technical problems which obstruct the continuous waste separation process in automated or manual waste sorting plants.
A German company in the recycling sector has developed a novel fully automated unit for the removal of plastic foils, films or other thin items with large surface areas from bulk waste streams prior to the actual sorting process. The sorting principle is based on the low density of the thin foil items.
The "Low-pressure separator" consists of two rotating perforated drums, each with one low-pressure area (suction zone) and one excess pressure area (blowing zone). Both drums are placed transversally to the conveyor belt direction with gaps in front and between them for dropping all solid non-foil waste material. From the conveyor the material stream is fed directly to the first rotating drum. Low-pressure nozzles inside the drum suck in the foils and thin sheets and carry them tangentially over the outside surface to the opposite side of the drum. Here the foils are blown off from the excess-pressure zone of the first drum and are drawn into the suction area of the second drum opposite. In this way the foil is turned onto its opposite side, so any other trapped solid parts are released and fall through the gap between the two drums.
Compared to systems used so far, the new process achieves much higher separation efficiency and higher throughput (quantity) of the material streams and substantially improves the separation quality of the foil and plastic sheeting materials. In addition it pre-cleans the waste stream thereby preventing blockages and technical problems in further downstream sorting processes.
The company seeks developers and manufacturers of complete waste sorting plants who are interested in improving and extending their portfolio by the new foil separator. It allows them to offer waste sorting plants of much higher quality and performance to customers in the recycling sector. But also operators of waste sorting plants are targeted as they can upgrade their existing sorting plants and thereby improve their sorting results. The technology proposer offers commercial agreements with technical assistance including customised engineering, technical support as well as advise and training of end users.

The new foil separation unit complements current sorting solutions by a very effective additional feature - the efficient and reliable pre-separation of plastic foils, films or other thin items with large surface areas prior to the sorting process.
Thus it prevents blockages in the downstream sorting process leading to much higher throughput-rates and separation quality. The new additional unit can easily be added to existing waste sorting plants.
