Description:
A French R-Y-D Research institute proposes non-destructive measurements for the determination of applied and residual stresses in a broad range of applications in terms of components and materials.
The complete determination of the stress tensor is derived from measured characteristics of the crystalline network obtained by neutron diffraction. Neutrons have the unique property to penetrate deep into metallic materials. For example, measurements are possible at the following distances from the surface: 6 cm of steel, 30 cm of Aluminum, 7 cm of Titanium.
Instruments are designed to handle real engineering components (see picture attached) such as components of turbines, ingots after casting, parts of aircraft wing, other machined parts (rolling, calendaring, hardening treated surfaces). Additionally, a tension-compression device allows in-situ measurements of lattice strain under thermo-mechanical loading, fatigue.

Examples of measurements:
- Residual stress after manufacturing processes: casting, effect of forging and associated thermal treatments (normalizing, quenching, tempering, etc.)
- Residual stresses after machining (cold drawing, hot/cold rolling)
- Residual stresses along welded areas, joints
- Investigation on hardening processes and thermal treatments
- Investigation of surface treatments (e.g. thermal spray coating, laser processing)
- Residual stress in 3D printed pieces (e.g. wire + arc additive manufacturing, laser cladding process)
- In-situ residual stress analysis during ageing treatments
