A Singapore hospital has developed a technology in the form of a driving simulation test (DST) for assessment of drivers´ fitness to drive. The DST replicates real-world driving environments in a sophisticated driving simulator. The DST can be used in human factors research and vehicle development.

The hospital is interested in establishing license agreements or research cooperation agreements with SMEs of all sizes or healthcare research institutions.
Description:
The proportion of elderly drivers in Singapore and worldwide is expected to increase as the elderly population increases. Elderly drivers are increasingly killed or hurt in road traffic accidents. If elderly drivers are accurately assessed on their fitness levels to drive, accidents may be prevented. However, current methods of assessing medical fitness to drive may not be adequate and new methods of driver rehabilitation and re-education in a convenient and safe environment are required. Current criteria of medical fitness to drive focuses on the presence of single or multiple medical conditions. These criteria do not consider the overall health status of the driver and the effect of that status on functional capacity.

Driving simulation removes the technical difficulty, liability, insurance cost and risks of on-road assessment. Sophisticated but expensive driving simulators do exist but their high cost is out of reach of most medical practitioners who assess drivers. A driving simulator program which is cost-effective and can be scaled down to be deployed easily to a medical clinic setting would allow drivers to be assessed fairly in a safe environment. This proposed Driving Simulation test (DST) overcomes these mentioned drawbacks and benefit medical facilities who administer fitness to drive tests.

TECHNOLOGY FEATURES AND SPECIFICATIONS:
1. The driving simulation software has excellent virtual reality for creating and editing functions related to the road alignments, cross sections, terrains, traffic, human pedestrians, lighting, weather conditions, buildings, sea, rivers, lakes, tunnels, bridges, etc. In addition the software can provide advance simulation including sunshine simulation, traffic flow simulation, manual drive simulation, etc.
2. The driver interacts with the system using a Logitech G27 steering controller fitted with a real KIA steering wheel.
3. Data acquisition system is capable of capturing the driver´s behavior on a real-time basis.
4. User is able to capture simulated results and reproduce them in both video format and numerical plots.
5. Event-based events can be easily created. User can set up all kinds of steering and braking events including merging into traffic, accident avoidance, interaction with other vehicles, etc

The hospital is interested in establishing license agreements and research cooperation agreements with partner from the healthcare industry, such as an SME of any size to commercialise the technology, or with a research institute for further R-Y-D.
Advantages and Innovations:
This technology can be employed in healthcare industry. It can also be employed in driver training schools. This virtual reality driving simulator can be marketed as a driver training tool to improve drivers´ safe driving skills. In addition, it is a cost-effective simulator system for the study of road, pathway and traffic designs with the safety of commuters/pedestrians/drivers as the main criteria. In general this simulator can be used for human factors research, vehicle development and many other aspects of road safety training.

The current state of the art is an on-road assessment by a driving instructor. However behind the wheel assessment and training is often done at considerable expense (especially when accidents happen) and evaluations can be subjective. This driving simulator has a drive-diagnosis plug-in that assesses driver´s driving skills against criteria including speed control, maneuvering skills, collision risk control, steering control and pedal control. One can also assign scoring criteria, perform video recording of the driving and save the results for further analysis to identify areas for improvement. Driving in the simulated virtual environment will not expose the driver to real physical danger and no one will be injured or be killed in the case that the driver made a mistake in driving.
