A Czech university developed an electricity generating system. The system employs organic fluid with phase change temperature lower than steam which allows recovering heat from low temperature industrial sources. The university is looking for commercial partners specialised in production of heat engines and offers the license agreement.
Description:
A Czech university developed a system is based on the organic rankine cycle which is a thermodynamic cycle for converting heat into mechanical work. A refrigerant is employed as the working fluid instead of water used in the traditional Rankine cycle found in thermal power plants.
These decentralized organic rankine cycle units are the solution for applications producing waste heat at low temperature in the power range from about 150 kW, therefore they are suitable for low potential heat sources such as cogeneration units, where it is possible to increase the efficiency of the entire system.
Due to fully automatic operation, the personnel demand is reduced to checking and maintenance work, which does not exceed 5 hours per week on average.
The university is looking for commercial partners specialised in production of heat engines and offers the license agreement.
Advantages and Innovations:
Currently organic rankine cycle units are commercially available only for relatively large applications with electric output of about 50 kW, which represents the requirement for the availability of waste heat source of at least 500 kW output. The proposed technology is oriented toward small applications with power output around 10 kW.
The developed solution incorporates a new type of expander with different operating characteristics. Moreover, it uses a special lubrication system, which will provide more reliable operation. The result of both of the approaches is the increase of the efficiency and reliability while keeping investment costs low. Operating costs mainly depend on the type of waste heat source and its characteristics. Another advantage is parallel arrangement of two expanders which enables better regulation of the mechanical power and hence the possibility of a wide range of power generation. This arrangement is particularly suitable for a technology with fluctuating production of waste heat.
