Un grupo de investigación de ingeniería de una universidad española ofrece un sistema de control inteligente de la actividad de luminarias de alumbrado público basado en tecnología LED y una red de sensores de presencia y dispositivos de comunicación para farolas. Este sistema está indicado para encender, apagar o mitigar a conveniencia las farolas situadas principalmente en carreteras. El sistema controla el alumbrado automáticamente, calculando la distancia y dirección del vehículo o usuario de la carretera, así como la capacidad del ojo humano para no percibir el cambio de intensidad de luz. El grupo de investigación busca socios con el fin de establecer acuerdos de fabricación y comercialización con asistencia técnica.

Summary:
An engineering research group from a Spanish university proposes an intelligent control system of the activity of street lighting luminaires based on LED technology. This system is intended to start / stop / mitigate conveniently the lights located primarily on highways. The research group is looking for manufacturing agreements and commercial agreement with technical assistance.
Description:
The research group has developed an intelligent road lighting control system based on LED technology and a network of presence sensors and communication devices on streetlights.

The system allows on, off or reduces lighting appropriately according to the presence of vehicles or users. The system automatically controls the lighting, calculating the distance and direction of the vehicle or road user, as far as the capacity of the human eye, so the lighting change is not perceived.

The system is based on mesh communication network between nodes (lamps), which do not require a central node so that it is a safe, simple, adaptable and cost system.

The system may be a revolution in LED street lighting systems, especially in tunnels and roads with little traffic, as it saves considerable costs of implementation and maintenance of existing public lighting control systems.

The framework of the project is the intelligent management of infrastructure networks and cities (Smart Cities). Development contributes to future energy saving in public lighting and to reduce light pollution.

The group is looking for companies from the construction, electronics, energy, environmental or ICT sector to reach commercial or collaboration agreements. The group is also interested in finding partners for R-Y-D regional or national calls and European projects.
Advantages and Innovations:
With this technology, a significant save of the energy cost of the roads where vehicle traffic is low/medium in a certain time will be achieved. The autonomous intelligent system on / off / lighting control is not implemented in any current system. Also thanks to wireless technology it forms a mesh structure of streetlights that can share information between them and even make a coordinated lighting.

This will achieve significant energy savings and a significant reduction of CO2. There is no control system as this one so far, and thanks to the technology implemented in the luminaire, added-value functions can be implemented.

This technology shows a new alternative and efficient way of saving energy and CO2. This is due to the fact of consuming energy only when is needed and not having the luminaries on unnecessarily. Bridging the gap, the saving can be extrapolated to the escalators that could be in low power mode when there are no people.
