Summary:
An Austrian based research organization has developed a microfluidic prototype system for rapid (within 30 min) and quantitative detection of plasma biomarkers in patients. This high-sensitivity point-of-care test can be applied within intensive care units, out-patient centers or primary care physicians. The organization is seeking license/technology and research cooperations with life science corporations, who are responsible for product development, marketing and sales worldwide.
Description:
Current measurement of inflammation biomarkers at the intensive care unit is performed within central laboratories with a sample to result time of approximately 3-4 hours. However, rapid and more frequent intervals of diagnosis are required for monitoring acute trauma patients in order to improve disease status and immediate therapeutic intervention schedules by clinical personal.

The Austrian research organization has developed a novel technology based solution and realized a prototype, which permits diagnostic point-of-care applications to be carried out with different protein biomarkers in a cost and time efficient manner. Further, the hand-held system is portable and can be adapted to an automated readout device

The applications are very broad ranging from human to veterinary related diagnostic tests:

· General point-of-care diagnostics
· Bedside immunomonitoring of biomarkers at intensive care units and hospitals
· Rapid diagnostics at the medical and dental offices
· Home based diagnostic for testing of biological samples (e.g. saliva, urine)
· Field testing such as veterinary testing at breeders and farmers

The system integrates a magnetic bead based immunoassay onto a microfluidic disposable chip, storing biomarker specific reagents. Chemiluminesence is used as a general detection method, which enables signal readout with a lens-less photodiode as optical detection unit. Monitoring of protein concentrations will be possible at the point of need for early therapeutic interventions.

The innovative technology for the measurement of protein concentrations in body fluids has been recently published in a peer-reviewed journal - available on request.

The Austrian research organisation is seeking for life science corporations interested in licensing the invention, joint technical or research cooperation.
Advantages and Innovations:
Current molecular point-of-care-devices have expensive and complex optical detection systems built. The here presented microfluidic system has been developed for rapid and quantitative detection of biomarkers in different body fluids with a cost-effective processing and detection platform.

This system has the potential to become the basis for establishing tailored diagnostic tests for therapy monitoring and precision medicine.
