Description:
The proposed technology permits to detect severe storms and rain and broadcast very accurate and precise alert information for preventing floods and potential damages to people and things.
The proposed solution is based on measuring the intensity of precipitations simply taking advantage of the information available from common satellites receivers such as the ones normally used for domestic TV systems. This is achieved by measuring the perturbation of a satellite signal caused by rain, water vapour, humidity in the troposphere.
The system comprises a central system and a plurality of remotely connected measuring units. Such units receive the radio signal from the satellites and measure the power of the signal and its electromagnetic features and timely transmits such data to the central unit for postprocessing.
Depending on the data received by the measuring units the system calculates the trajectories of the radio signals and also the nature, intensity and accurate positioning of weather phenomenon causing the signal alteration and evaluates the need for broadcasting a message of severe weather alarm.
The accuracy of the information provided by this system clearly depends on the number of the measuring units on the ground which is normally a major factor of consideration for the systems commonly available on the market. Under this point of view the proposed solution is cost-effective because it works with very cheap and commonly used low cost instruments thus allowing the implementation of a very accurate sensing network.
Advantages and Innovations:
The proposed solution is based on very low cost instruments for measuring the power of a satellite radio signal altered by the weather phenomena occuring in the troposphere. This permits to implement a very accurate monitoring network with a limited budget and commonly used hardware.
