The delivery of health care has proceeded for decades with a blind spot: Diagnostic errors persist throughout all settings of care and continue to harm an unacceptable number of patients." (Institute of Medicine, September 2015) One in seven diagnoses is wrong. Physicians have to differentiate among 20,000 potential diseases. Only 3% of the physicians are satisfied with the existing research options for diagnostic information. Each year, 0.5-1.5 million lives could be saved with the right diagnosis.

In order to reduce the amount of diagnostic errors, an Austrian start-up developed a search engine for diseases. Physicians enter symptoms and receive a list of matching causes - sorted by probability for the case according to age, sex and geography. This information helps physicians to make the right diagnosis for their patients.

The backbone of the innovation is the probably biggest and most complex diseases database with millions of connections to symptoms, risk factors and statistics. More than seven years of research and development resulted in a proprietary technology to identify and mine relevant diagnostic data from medical publications. This data is later validated by a team of 20+ physicians to ensure its reliability. The algorithm delivers results sorted by probability for the specific case. Thus, the systems recall (sensitivity) and precision (specificity) are extremely high.

The main advantage over existing solutions is therefore a huge and high quality database. The software also stands out in terms of usability as physicians can access the information of the database similar to a search engine like Google.

Three easy steps for differential diagnosis:
1) Physicians enter patient´s symptoms, birth year and sex. Further symptoms or regions may be added as well (e.g. holiday location or home country)
2) The physician receives a list and graphics of matching diagnoses, weighted by the probability for the case. The list can be refined by adding more symptoms
3) A description for each disease can be displayed. Details also include further symptoms, lab results, diagnostic test results and complications which may apply to the case.

The software targets hospitals and physicians worldwide (English and German speaking). The company is looking for partners that want to implement the technology in complementary software solutions, medical products, diagnosis tools or hospital information systems. Also, partners are sought to enlarge and further improve the data through collaboration with specialists, hospitals, and universities. The company is open to various types of cooperation: commercial agreements, technical cooperation, research agreements and others for whatever is best suited.
