Un centro tecnológico privado español especializado en tecnologías ópticas y de imagen ha desarrollado un nuevo sistema de visión artificial para hacer un seguimiento y análisis de los movimientos biomecánicos de nadadores. Este sistema de alta precisión permite detectar y analizar los movimientos biomecánicos de nadadores para mejorar su rendimiento y puede emplearse en competiciones, cubriendo todas las modalidades (estilo libre, natación contracorriente y waterpolo). El centro busca socios con el fin de establecer acuerdos de servicio.


Machine vision system for tracking and analysis of swimmers biomechanical movements.
A private technology center from Spain has developed an innovative machine vision system for tracking and analysis of swimmers biomechanical movements. This high precision machine vision system detects and analyzes individual swimmers´ biomechanical movements allowing them to improve and enhance performance. The organization is looking for services agreements.
The Spanish technology center, specialized in optical and imaging technologies, has great experience in providing advanced technology services and developing RTDI projects in cooperation with other technology and research centers, universities and private enterprises. The machine vision system for tracking and analysis of swimmers biomechanical movements can be used in swimming competition -covering all existing modalities-, freestyle swimming, current swimming and water polo.

Performance of the system: by a distribution of several top view camera located on the inspection area (for example, a 25-meter pool) a complete synchronized image is achieved. Then, by using detection and tracking algorithms or "tracking" people´s movement pattern, each swimmer in the inspection area is individually identified and his/her biomechanical movements are analyzed.

Architecture of the system: the system will consist of two main subsystems, a distribution of top view camera with the ability to span the entire swimming-pool. The processing unit implements the necessary machine vision algorithms for the calculation of the analytical, being such information sent through established communications network (Ethernet, TCP/IP) to a graphic interface, which is charge of statistics of the global system, generation events, etc.

Rather than just commercialize the technology with technical assistance, the center is offering its technological advisory services on optical technologies to private and public swimming pools or companies with duties in managing this kind of premises or sporting events and, if necessary, support for the acquisition of mainstream technologies for the implementation of the system. Consequently, the technology center offers services agreements to facilities management companies and other organizations interested in integrating this innovative machine vision system.
Advantages and Innovations:
The system is fully operational within the following features:

- Automatic registration and real-time transition times in the head calibrated pool areas (usually every 5 m), up to 8 lanes simultaneously. These calculations are performed in distances up to 2000m in swimming-pool of 25m,
- Calculation in real-time of average speed on these sections,
- Calculation in real-time of the frequency of stroke cycle. At least in the central sections of the swimming-pool (between 5 to 20m) in both directions of displacement,
- Times lap, speeds and frequencies on the monitor in real time, displayed on screen for each lane,
- After the end of the registration are calculated and shown graphically all secondary variables: Departure time in 15m, turning time (approximation (5m) and separation (10m and 15m), frequency and length of long cycle length by length and time of arrival (5m),
- Calculating the average speed in all lanes, and presentation of a report graphically,
- Tracking of displacement free: marking from an object in the registration area (head, hat, point light or ball) and make the tracking of the object around the swimming-pool space,
- Ability to be able to 20 different points simultaneously,
- There will appear records of the trajectory of the point and calculations of the instantaneous speed of the displacement already said,
- Analysis on channels, by measuring the frequency of cycle of stroke in real time, on impressed on registration of video (in cycles per minute),
- After the real-time recording, will be calculated and shown graphically the speed variation intracycle of a bright point placed in the hip (must be visible at all times) or of the cap of the swimmer over time.
