Un grupo de investigación italiano ha desarrollado una nueva herramienta avanzada para grabar la actividad cerebral superficial y ofrecer estimulación, en particular un sistema de grabación totalmente integrado que incluye un array de microelectrodos (MEA) ultraflexible con un chip acoplado para amplificar la señal. Una de sus principales características es su versatilidad, ya que no solo se utiliza como sistema totalmente integrado para grabaciones electroencefalográficas sino también para otros registros (electrocardiografía, electromiografía, etc.). El grupo de investigación busca socios con el fin de establecer acuerdos de investigación, financiación, cooperación y comercialización con asistencia técnica.

The researchers are interested in finding partners for various types of agreement: research cooperation, financial, technical cooperation, and commercial agreement with techical assistance.
Description:
An Italian research group has developing an advanced tool for recording superficial brain activity and provide stimulation. In particular, the group is focused on a fully integrated recording system, that includes an ultra-flexible microelectrode array (MEA) with a closely coupled VLSI chip (Very large scale integration) for signal amplification, filtering and digitization.
The whole system represents an innovative tool for recording and stimulation of low-power biosignals, with enhanced performances, if compared to commercially available tools. One of its best characteristics is the versatility, indeed, it could be used not only as a fully integrated system for the electroencephalographic recordings but also to perform a plethora of other measurements:
· Electrocardiography (EKG)
· Electromyography (EMG)
· Miniaturized multi-channel headstages for neural or ECoG recording
· Low-power wireless headstages or backpacks for electrophysiology experiments
· Recording spikes and/or local field potentials (LFPs) from microelectrodes
· In vitro recording systems "Smart Petri dish"
· Portable EKG or EMG monitoring systems
· Advanced prosthetic limb controller front-ends

Moreover, taking advantage from the double function as recorder and stimulator, closed loop algorithms can be implemented.

The enhanced results lead the basis for a spin-off company project (currently under evaluation). With this purpose, the researchers are interested in finding partners for various types of agreement: research cooperation with partners operating in medical and Neurophysiological sector in order to further improve the tool and to find new applications; financial agreement with industrial partners interested in investing on the Italian researchers; technical cooperation with other researchers or companies sharing know how and resources to further develop technical aspects of the device. As soon as the tool will be refined, they would like to reach also commercial agreement with technical assistance with companies intereste in acquiring it, offering the researchers´ technical support.
Advantages and Innovations:
The whole system presents enhanced charateristics respect to the other tools available on the market for low-power biosignals recording and stimulation. In particular the innovations and advantages are: superficial neuronal activity recording; the possibility of acquiring 32 channels simultaneously; recording and electrical stimulation simultaneously performed; USB connection; customizable software interface and possibility of integrating a closed loop control algorithm of the neuronal activity; Low power.
Furthermore, as said above,it could be used for other applications like: Electrocardiography, Miniaturized multi-channel headstages for neural or ECoG recording, In vitro recording systems "Smart Petri dish", electromyographic interface.
