Description:
The problem:
Humidity and moisture monitoring in a timber construction might be difficult as early warning alerts are crucial for saving costs and reliability of the construction. It has been shown in last decade that increased moisture and humidity is worse danger for wooden structures then a fire. The increased moisture of wooden construction is most of the time caused by accidents and bad construction works. The accidents are micro leakages from the plumbing system, leakages on waste water system, broken hydro-isolation foils and condensing water in the construction. The problem of wooden houses is even more critical because the consequences of increased moisture in the construction are visible in interior in the time when hidden part of the construction is already damaged.

The solution offered:
A department of the Czech university has solved this issue by developing a unique system allowing humidity and moisture monitoring directly in the structure of timber-building construction. The system itself is especially designed for use in the wooden buildings. The control unit used generates visual and/or acoustic alarms in case of increased or critical humidity or moisture detection and the system allows long-term data storage and visualization via web browser. Additionally, the system offered can reveal even small hidden leakages and is able to estimate the location of leakage within the building.
The solution offered is based on a sensor and a control unit. The sensor measuring relative air humidity in isolation materials or in cavities in a range 0-100 % relative humidity and temperature with an accuracy ±2 % relative humidity. With an accuracy of ±0,3 °C measures water content directly in a construction material. The system is able to measure wooden construction in a range between 7-30 % relative humidity with an accuracy of ±2 %. It is also able to measure other materials (e.g. Medium density fibreboards, plasterboards or Oriented strand boards etc.). For a calibration of each sensor for a particular measured material a digital noise-resistant communication bus is used, which allows easy installation of sensors by using only two wood screws.
The control unit uses a unique evaluation algorithm for increased moisture detection, which contains LCD display or signalling LED diode for an indicating increased moisture state or a serious problem. A USB port and a microSD slot for storing and presenting long-term data is built-in also for connecting to the other systems (e.g. home security system).

The competing solutions:
Current competing solutions are using portable hand held moisture testers which are very cheap and accessible. Unfortunately they are not dedicated for permanent installation in the construction. Main drawback of wooden houses is that the inner part of the timber construction is not exposed and thus not accessible for regular test measurement. The advantage of proposed solution is that individual sensors are placed into the construction directly during construction phase and became a part of the construction. At the moment there is no comparable solution on the market and thus the demand for MoistureGuard system is high.

The partner sought:
The university department is looking for industrial partners who would like to acquire a licence to manufacture the offered system based on a licensing agreement. The content of a licensing agreement will be an exclusive know-how to build an offered system together with all necessary manufacturing documentation covering, Mechanical design, electrical design, PCB design, firmware, communication protocol description.
