A diferencia de los bioensayos convencionales, esta técnica no requiere procesos largos ni necesita organismos vivos. Los resultados son reproducibles y se obtienen de forma rápida. El nuevo concepto se basa en mediciones instrumentales en muestras de agua con un sistema de múltiples sensores electroquímicos y procesamiento multivariado de los datos obtenidos. La empresa busca cooperación técnica para desarrollar el prototipo industrial.


Multisensor systems for water toxicity assessment
A Russian SME from Saint-Petersburg has developed a novel instrumental approach for toxicity estimation in ecological monitoring. Unlike conventional bioassay methods with living organisms, the suggested technique does not require long procedures and involvement of living creatures. The results are reproducible and can be obtained fast. The company is looking for technical cooperation, in order to develop this invention into an industrial prototype.
Toxicity is a very important parameter of water quality, it is controlled on a regular basis by governmental and industrial bodies to assure the safety of industrial sewage, surface waters, urban waters, etc. Toxicity is monitored by means of so called bioassays, i.e. by studying the response of living organisms to the water quality. During this procedure, biotest objects (algae, copepods, fish) are placed into a sample under study and certain parameters of their life activity (growth rate, movement, etc.) are monitored. There are certain limitations associated with this technique: biotest organisms must be properly bred, fed and kept under strictly regulated conditions, and duration of tests can be quite long (up to several days). Thus, the whole procedure is the prerogative of a limited number of highly specialized laboratories, and it is quite expensive.
The Russian company accomplished the feasibility study for a new approach to the toxicity evaluation. This new concept is based on instrumental measurements in water samples with a specially developed electrochemical multisensor system and multivariate processing of the obtained data. This combination of the sensor array and chemometric techniques allows for toxicity determination in terms of bioassay without immediate involvement of living creatures (besides of the calibration stage); the measurements are fast and simple; the results are provided in toxicity units for the corresponding biotest objects.
The company has extensive experience in the following fields:
- development and manufacture of chemical sensors based on a variety of materials like organic polymers, chalcogenide glasses, polycrystalline materials;
- development of "electronic tongue" multisensor systems for taste and quality analysis in food and pharmaceutical industry;
- multivariate data processing (chemometrics), multidimensional calibration.
The company is looking for partners for joint development of an industrial prototype of the system for instrumental toxicity control, and/or for the formal national and/or EU certification of this technology.
Advantages and Innovations:
The innovative part of the system is the specially designed multisensor array with an expressed sensitivity towards various toxicants and the original algorithms for mathematical data processing.
The suggested methodology allows for analysis time of 10 minutes, instead of several hours or several days with bioassay.
The tests are much cheaper than with bioassays, since no biota and reagents are involved.
