A Start-up company from the North East of Italy develops Diesel engines and assembles them with electric motors for general aviation and ultra-light aircraft, producing advanced Hybrid Propulsion s Systems. This technology represent a new model of efficiency for the aviation market, born from the brainwave of a start-up and from the experiences gained by the Italian team. With the diesel-hybrid technology, the efficiency and environmental sustainability of aircraft engines are guaranteed. The aviation diesel engine is a specific application of the aluminium engine, already popular model in the automotive market, which has good performance and low emissions. The engine has been further lightened and optimized for the use on airplanes. Such a development has required a thorough redesign that has not neglected particular details. For the development of these engines, several collaborations with the greatest Italian experts in motor engineering have been used. Much of the research and innovation activities are currently carried out in partnership with some of the major Italian motor companies, particularly in the area of Parma and Modena, where there are real "ateliers" in which the magicians of Moto GP racing and Formula One operate. Many changes based on the needs of the aviation market are introduced such as the fact that all lubrication systems have been redesigned to allow even in upside down flight. Such a modified diesel engine have been integrated with an electric one to complete the hybrid system. Both engines are driven by a software application that continually evaluates the performance and - according to the requirements of the flight phase - determines the distribution of power. The motors therefore work together, and are called on at any time to provide the required power following a curve of efficiency that adheres perfectly to the flight profile.
Advantages and Innovations:
These hybrid propulsion systems reduces fuel consumption by 30% allowing to travel over long distances. With the electric motor there is an extra power for taking off and a "spare" engine in case of emergency. Aviation has neglected the diesel engine, but the model devised by this company has a weight / power ratio to 0,8/1, ( 0,8 Kg for each Kw (1,3 Hp) of Power Available).
