Description:
An Italian academic spin-off offers a data warehouse system to aggregate/integrate, query and analyze patient data, addressing mainly the health-care institutes operating in the field of scientific research.

The company supports the whole phase of integration/aggregation of data coming from different sources, leveraging its expertise in the deployment of advanced functionalities of ETL (i.e. Extract, Trasform and Load) to automate the process of populating the data warehouse and provide a steady and secure update of the entire system.

The system allows the user to query the data-warehouse through a simple and intuitive web interface. This step is facilitated by the use of an ontology of concepts that maps the available patient information. For each research project, a suitable ontology is defined in order to allow the user to easily select the patients of interest by composing even quite complex rules based on such concepts.

The system finally allows the user to perform operations of control, reporting and analysis of data concerning the selected patients, exploiting the available applications. Moreover, the system can be configured according to user´s needs by adding customizable analysis tools. In particular, an open-source suite is included in the solution to allow the development of specific tools for statistical analysis. The expertise of the company allows also the implementation of more sophisticated data-mining and bioinformatics approaches.

Data coming from heterogeneous sources can be integrated in the data warehouse system.
Possible types of data are:

a. Demographic and clinical data.

b. Information related to the samples stored in a biobank. This integration allows the user to perform fast searches by selecting patients for which some samples with certain characteristics are available in the biobank. It is crucial for designing clinical trials, or, more specifically, molecular studies.

c. Data extracted from clinical reports written in free text (i.e. natural language) thanks to sophisticated NLP (Natural language processing) algorithms.

d. Molecular Big Data: gene expression data, proteomics/metabolomics/lipidomics quantitative data, as well as data generated by Next Generation Sequencing.

An innovative extension of the system allows queries on data of different institutes/hospitals, by retrieving only aggregated counts of patients satisfying the criteria of the query, so that patient privacy is protected. This extension have several useful applications for researchers, health institutions and pharmaceutical companies: planning research projects requiring large sample sizes not easily available at any single institution; identifying potential cohorts for clinical trials.
