Un laboratorio francés ha desarrollado un nuevo software de procesamiento de imágenes para generar texturas anisotrópicas. La principal aplicación médica es la caracterización de la densidad de tejidos en imágenes médicas. El software de código abierto está protegido bajo leyes de copyright y se utiliza para caracterizar y clasificar la densidad en mamogramas y evaluar los riesgos del cáncer de pecho y de fractura osteoporótica. Images observed in nature or produced by instruments including microscopes or industrial devices often show a textural aspect.
In medical image analysis there are many attempts to characterize texture roughness. Fractional Brownian Field models are not completely satisfactory for some applications, since it does no reveal texture anisotropy, which can be an important predicting factor for diagnosis.

A French laboratory has developed a Simulator Texture Software for generating anisotropic texture of medical images and helping diagnosis. Based on the turning-band method, the SIM Texture Software enables to simulate anisotropic textures from a relevant model of fractional Brownian field.

This software can be used for the characterization and classification of the mammogram density, the assessment of breast cancer risk and osteoprorotic fracture risk.

The main difficulty with this modeling consists in the estimation of the anisotropy. Researchers constructed consistent estimators for the texture anisotropy analysis. The software can be used to assess breast cancer risks from mammography acquisitions. Applied to Full-Field Digital Mammograms: about 60 percent of textures can be considered as anisotropic with a high level of confidence.

This texture generator software gives access to monitored simulation precision and visualization of models properties. This non stationary image generator can find applications in texture analysis of digital images, in particular in:
- Graphic design, architecture
- Medical imaging ((e.g. the characterization and classification of the mammogram density, the assessment of breast cancer risk and osteoprorotic fracture risk)
