A startup company, based in the south of Italy, has developed and successfully launched at national level a smart, effective and low cost solution to maximise saving in street lighting systems.

The solution is of great interest for local administrations but also for Energy Saving Companies (ESCO), that may want to prevent gross errors during the design phase, and for lighting solutions providers and professional operators that may elaborate customised lamps´ replacement strategies for their clients.

In fact, it is normally quite difficult to correctly estimate the actual saving expected from the modernization of a public lighting system, and, consequently, select the most appropriate financing solution (eg., balancing project financing and direct investment), mainly due to lack of detailed information on the existing lighting plants, as well as of engineering skills. This is clearly a problem for local administrations but also for ESCOs that may risk a broad overestimation or underestimation of their offer.

The proposed solution is based on the flexible combination of three smart components. The main component is a cloud softtware platform to run advanced design algorithms for lighting efficiency and for the automatic elaboration of the ligthing project.

The platform can be coupled with a dedicated hardware device that, once connected to a street power board, is able to retrieve and analyse the electrical parameters of the existing street lighting system and identify possible sources of inefficiencies (such as overvoltages, daylight-active lights, reactive energy, etc.).

Finally, the solution is completed by a smart mobile application that can be used to map type and geo-position of existing lamps. After a very short training, the mapping campaign can be done by non specialised personnel, during daily hours and in a limited period of time. This is crucial to retrieve, quickly and at low cost, all needed information so that the subsequent design phase can be based on a complete and up-to-date set of information: from existing cases, the economic benefits can be very relevant.

Thus, the software platform is able to combine all such data (characterstics of the lighting fixtures, data on illuminated areas, possible sources of local inefficiencies) to detect energy wastes, devise a valuable overall lighting optimisation strategy and compute the optimal solutions for each single street.

In addition, the system is also able to determine the economic return indicators for a given re-qualification project (per single street, electric board and total facility) and to propose a complete drafting of the City´s Lighting Regulatory Plan.

The combination of all such features is quite unique in the current panorama of existing solutions.

In order to adapt the solution to the EU market, the company is looking for ESCO´s, engineering companies or lighting solution providers that are interested into a technical agreement to jointly develop a localised version in line with local standards. The company is also interested in a commercial agreement with technical assistance to introduce the product in new markets.
