Dos centros de investigación y una universidad españoles han desarrollado una sonda capaz de analizar numerosas propiedades fisicoquímicas de forma simultánea. Esta sonda permite realizar un estudio geomicrobiológico debajo de la superficie en condiciones de hábitat extremas, como temperatura, corrosión y acidez. La sonda transmite información en tiempo real y a larga distancia e incorpora numerosos sensores para medir el pH, temperatura, potencial redox, conductividad, concentraciones de iones específicos, oxígeno disuelto, presión, turbidez y flujo, etc. Se buscan socios en los sectores de prospección minera, exploración geológica y análisis geofísico, geomicrobiológico y ambiental con fin de colaborar mediante un acuerdo de licencia de patente.

Summary:
Two Spanish Research Institutions and one Spanish University have developed a probe capable of analyzing multiple physicochemical properties simultaneously. It allows the geomicrobiological study of the subsurface in extreme habitat conditions such as temperature, corrosion and acidity.
Industrial partners working on mining prospecting, geological exploration, geophysical, geomicrobiological, environmental analysis are being sought to collaborate through a patent licence agreement.
Description:
The study of ground subsurface geomicrobiology is an issue of increasing interest and new methodologies are needed to improve its monitoring. Probes should be able to resist extreme habitat conditions, send measurement data simultaneously and have a small size (<50 mm) to be introduced in perforations. This limitation hinders the design and set up of multiparametric probes suitable for monitoring the subsoil at great depths, and makes the number of integrated sensors very low. As a consequence of this limitation, commercial probes capable of real time monitoring are typically able to measure only a few basic parameters as temperature, pressure and flow.

The main advantage of the new probe is its ability to measure multiple physicochemical properties, suitable for the monitoring of the geomicrobiological activity in deep perforations in subterranean environments. Additionally, sensors are configurable and different types may be used depending on the environment to analyze
This multiparametric probe was designed for subsurface monitoring at great depths, with high accuracy, low level of maintenance, capable of measuring at different depths simultaneously.
It is able to transmit information in real-time and to long distance. Its main body can contain up to tens of sensors to measure pH, temperature, redox potential, conductivity, different specific ions concentrations, dissolved oxygen, pressure, turbidity and flow, among others. This is achieved by providing a novel technology of miniaturization for this type of probes that offers a better use of the space in the main body. It is furthermore possible to provide a structural reinforcement to the sensor case, making it more compact and miniaturized. This allows providing a multiparametric probe more resistant that does not require frequent maintenance, and can remain under the subsoil during months with a correct operation.
The probe is able to make those measurements in extreme acidic, oxidant and high pressure conditions.
Advantages and Innovations:
¿ Completely operative at depths up to several kilometres, and a performance longer than one year without maintenance.
¿ Total diameter of the probe is 38mm, improving existing probes sized 50-60mm.
¿ It is suitable to house up 30-50 sensors.
¿ The probe withstands extreme acidic (pH<2) conditions, high or low temperature (-20 to 70ºC), high ions concentration (for example, Fe3+) and high pressure (>1Mbar).
