The Italian company is a young start-up, spin-off of a major Italian university, founded in 2015 after winning a startup competition, qualifying as the best innovative business idea in their region, and receiving the UK-Trade -Y- Investment award.
The company mission is centered on the development of augmented reality systems being low cost, wearable and less intrusive on the environment, for safe assisted navigation or tracking of people and objects in indoor and outdoor spaces not covered by other navigation systems such as GPS. Such systems are designed to meet the needs of people with problems of orientation, people with sight impairment or blind people, with the addition of several innovative services associated with the navigation.
The company founders are mainly ICT experts, active in the field of scientific and technological research and social innovation for blind, with past experience in various national and international research projects. The team has been involved in the development of various mobile APPs and platforms, ranging from energy management to radio communications systems.
Their product is created to allow the visually impaired or people with other disabilities, to move autonomously. Users are guided by their smartphone along some predetermined paths, both indoors and outdoors, in unknown environment, often not covered by other navigation systems such as GPS. The system also aims at replacing/complementing the expensive tactile pavements currently in use in public places, with small colored strips suitably designed and applied on the floor. These paths, which are made of simple colored ribbons, paints or similar materials, are the only external instrument that is needed to be installed in the places where the system will work. The realization of the paths is therefore quite simple, low cost and does not require long installation and realization time (which also makes them easily changeable). In addition, we provide a set of tags (labels) to be deployed in the environment, realized in various ways depending on the context (decorative elements easily identifiable, colorful stripes, QR codes, Beacons, RFID-RadioFrequncyIDentification, etc.) and an instrument of mediation between augmented reality and the user (typically a smartphone) to access the information disseminated in the environment through the tags and offer services, depending on the position, which exploit this information.
The company is looking for R-Y-D partners (academic or industrial) for EU funded projects, in order to collaborate and expand functionalities and services of all parties. A research cooperation or a technical cooperation will be the proposed kinds of agreement.
Advantages and Innovations:
The company mission is to help visually impaired, blind or people with other disabilities, to move autonomously. The problem of assisted navigation, especially in indoors where GPS is not available, is a problem with no solution. The company has a developed a flexible, low-cost navigation system, which can be used in any indoor environment (airports, museums, hospitals, shopping malls, etc.) and outdoor (stations, sidewalks, etc.). It provides high precision localization services to any person (including non-visually impaired) and can also be used by third parties as a platform to provide innovative location-based services, especially dedicated to visually impaired. The main idea is substituting or complementing the expensive tactile pavements today in use with low-cost, flexible and easily deployable traces (such as colored tapes, luminescent stripes, or painted lines similar to the ones used for horizontal road signs) that can be detected by a smartphone, acting as a mediation instrument between the user and the reality. The company offers two main services to visually impaired people: the guiding service, for allowing the users to follow the trace deployed in the environment; the navigation service, for finding directions towards a given destination on the trace maps and retrieve other location-based information. Audio messages can be activated on demand, informing in relevant positions about the direction to take, or in case of emergency. Along the path, special tags will also be placed to provide the user further information related to his/her location. Additionally, new location-based services can be offered to visually impaired, such as:
· Audio guide and information related to the places (tourism, real time news, events, etc.)
· Real time tracking for on-line assistance
· Location based services, with generation and management of user-generated content
· Target advertising
