A Dutch start up company has developed a magnetic connection technology to replace temporary steel welds for hoisting and lashing. The steel connection is guaranteed with a patented measurement method checking the attachment force. When welding is not allowed because of explosion risk, magnets offer a solution. Due to the prevention of welding, work processes are faster, cleaner and cheaper. The company is looking for lead customers to establish a commercial agreement with technical assistance.
Description:
In industrial sectors there is always interest to reduce costs, shorten completion time and improve working conditions. With in depth knowledge of the physics of magnets and the use of magnets in an industrial environment this start up company came up with a new solution to connect attachment points like hoisting and lashing eyes to steel structures. By developing heavy duty permanent magnets, specific testing tools and procedures magnets can now be applied as a safe and secure steel connection. In situations where welding is not allowed because op explosion risk, magnets offer a solution. In other cases the technology prevents the disadvantages of welding such as the need for a welding specialist, electric power and damaging of the steel structure. But also with the removal of the welding afterwards with steel cutting and restoring the coating.
The technology consists of a manually switchable three-pole magnet and two testing tools for verifying that the magnetic connection delivers the required force. There is a testing tool for pull force and a testing tool for shear force. The magnetic connection technology is applicable in the maritime, maintenance and process industries for example for hoisting and lashing eyes on ships, offshore installations, wind mills and petrochemical installations. In the maintenance industry several pilots have been completed successfully where scaffolds are connected magnetically to steel structures. An agreement with a leading distributor in the scaffolding sector for the Benelux market was already made.

Advantages and Innovations:
The innovation is that permanent magnets, when they are combined with specific testing tools and procedures, can be used for reliable temporary steel to steel connections. Regularly these temporary connections are made by welding and afterwards cutting it of.

The main advantages of this connection technology compared to welding is that it saves costs, improves working conditions and shortens completion time. Cost savings will be realized because no specialist welders are needed and the removal process is fast with no need for restoring and painting the steel skin. The working conditions are very clean without aggressive heat and light that demand special precautions and protection. Also the removal of the weld by means of steel cutting creating a lot of sparks is superfluous. Cleaner and more simple work processes with less protection measurements and less technical disciplines result in shortening of completion time.
More specific for situations were welding is not allowed due to explosion risks this magnetic connection technology offers a unique solution. This also counts when the heat of welding affects the characteristics of the steel substrate in an unacceptable way.
