Description:
This SME located in the Ile-de-France region produces filtration resins for industrial water treatment. By filtering industrial waste or process water through columns of the company's resin beads, metals are selectively retained inside them for an easy recovery. The clean water is then released, metal free.
It can target specific metals and remove them from a complex effluent, including concentrated acid and oxidizing solutions. This creates value for customers dealing with precious metals such as palladium, platinum, rhodium and gold. In effluents where the metals would normally be lost, the technology can recover them.
Although traditional chemical industry has been producing water filtration resins for decades, these specific resins distinguish themselves from the competition on three important aspects: selectivity, performance and resistance.
The macro-porous resin beads are very similar in physical aspect to ion-exchange resins that can be found, for example, in water softening installations. However, their chemical functionalities are very different from the readily available ion-exchangers. This is because the company uses the chemistry of phosphorus, more specifically, phosphines, to functionalise the resin beads. This unique approach leads to materials that bind transition metals very tightly via coordination chemistry mechanisms. This approach provides the technology with unique performance and selectivity skills.
The metals that the French SME targets are either toxic ones (nickel, zinc, lead, indium and gallium), the removal of which is motivated by regulation, or precious ones (platinum, palladium, rhodium, iridium and gold) : their removal is then motivated by recovery and financial gain.
Advantages and Innovations:
Although traditional chemical industry has been producing water filtration resins for decades, the resins here used distinguish themselves from their competitiors on three important aspects: selectivity, performance and resistance:
- Selectivity is the ability to pick out targeted metals from complex effluents that contains many other things, including other metals, salts or organics components.
- Performance is the ability to remove all of the targeted metal to the very last trace.
- Resistance to harsh conditions, such as acidic and oxidizing conditions so to be able to function in effluents where the competition cannot.
Whereas performance guarantees the customers with a result, selectivity ensures that the operational cost of the installation is acceptable and the resins do not saturate with unwanted material.
