A Dutch SME, as partner of an international group, is specialized in the development of advanced microfluidic and nanotechnology product solutions. The development of advanced microfluidic and nanotechnology product solutions is based on the availability of a toolbox. Two important tools in the toolbox are:
1. A Photo Sensitive Glass Ceramic (PSGC) material.
2. A room temperature bonding process.

On the basis of these two tools, the material and the room temperature bonding process, it is possible to develop and produce a wide variety of new microbiological, mechanical, electrical and optical components, products and processes for the advanced microfluidic and nanotechnology market segments.

For the microfluidic market segment the use of embedding fluid technology leads to a whole range of possible products. Two important market segments are:
1. Microfluidics for biotechnology applications.
2. Microfluidics for chemistry applications.

Microfluidics for biotechnology applications
The structural glass etch capabilities combined with the ambient bonding technology allows to build complex fluid filled components with very flat surfaces and high aspect ratio channels and walls. These production tools facilitate development and volume manufacture of products for the following areas:
· Cytometry (measurement of various parameters of cells).
· Circulating tumor cell capture.
· Microfluidics.
· Cell sorting
· Pre-coated attach

For these areas three classes products can be offered:
· Micro titerplates.
· Lab on chip systems.
· Channel and/or nozzle systems for various applications.

Microfluids for chemistry applications
In the microreaction process it is possible to mix different media within an adjustable range of volume flows. The media temperature can be controlled very easily by incorporating heater- or chiller circuitry.
Miniature channel dimensions of the microreactors demonstrate high volume to surface ratios. As a result microreactors reveal advantages compared to batch processes like perfect fast mixing, very efficient heat control and a low reaction volume.
It is possible to influence the chemical reactions by photochemistry, separation technology and nitration reactions.

Advantages and Innovations:
The innovations are:
· The function to embed fluids, cell structures or biocoatings in hermetically sealed transparent cavities without damaging the fragile content thanks to the ambient temperature bonding process
· The bonding of biocompatible transparent chemical inert materials with both matched and mismatched thermal coefficients of expansion (TCE), while producing extremely flat / distortion free components.
· The incorporation of electrical leads within the bond joint. The leads can be used for the control of electrophoresis devices and the connection of temperature sensors, heaters, particle counters or biological cell sensors. To avoid electrophoresis of embedded fluids the electrical leads or electrodes can be insulated with inorganic insulating films.
· The bonding technology easily competes with other bonding technologies (anodic / diffusion / adhesive bonding) does not demonstrate the side effects of heat distortion, sodium migration or surface charge modification.
