Magnetic anchor point technology enabling more cost efficient, faster and safe scaffolding
A Dutch company has developed a magnetic anchor point to attach scaffolds to metal structures. With a patented measurement method the attachment force of each anchor point is checked to guarantee the safety. The magnets prevent the welding of anchor points that are not allowed because of explosion risk. They also prevent the building of big stand alone scaffolds. The company is looking for lead customers and distributors within the frame of a commercial agreement with technical assistance .
In the maintenance sector companies are always interested to reduce costs and shorten completion time. Supporting the client to increase the uptime of his installations. With in depth knowledge of the physics of magnets and the use of magnets in an industrial environment this Dutch techno start up company came up with a new solution for the attachment of scaffolds to big steel structures like proces tanks and ships. By developing heavy duty permanent magnets, specific testing tools and procedures magnets can now be applied as a safe and secure anchor point for scaffolds. In situations where the welding of anchor points is not allowed, lean and cost effective scaffolds can be build that are magnetically attached to the structure. The technology also prevents the welding of anchor points that damage the material and that in some cases are not allowed because of explosion risk.

The technology consists of a manually switchable three-pole magnet and two testing tools for verifying that the scaffold anchor point is attached with the required force. There is a testing tool for pull force and a testing tool for shear force. The magnetic anchor point technology is applicable for scaffolding against ships in a dry dock, offshore installations, wind mills and petrochemical installations. Several pilots have been completed succesfully in the maintenance industry. An agreement with a leading distributor for the Benelux market was already made.

The expertise and know-how of the company comprises:

The magnetic anchor point technology will be supplied within the framework of a commercial agreement with technical assistance. The company will support the partner with the implementation of this technology in the scaffolding sector.
Advantages and Innovations:
The innovation is that permanent magnets can be used for anchoring scaffolds to steel structures when they are combined with specific testing tools and procedures. Regularly scaffolds are anchored by welding anchor points. When this is not allowed due to explosion hazards large free standing scaffolds in the shape of a pyramid have to be build.

The main advantage is that with this technology it is possible to build in a lean and mean way a safely attached scaffold. This results in 70% savings in the use of scaffold material and the elimination of ballast material. Due to this the logistics needed are seriously reduced and a 40% savings in turnaround time is achievable.
In situations where welded anchor points are allowed, the advantage is that magnetic anchor points do not damage the material of the structure. Welding and possible removal of welded anchor points are costly because of the extra technological disciplines that are needed.

More specific the advantages of this magnetic anchor point technology are of interest for both the scaffold builder and the utility owner.
For the builder, the main advantage is that he can be more competitive by delivering a more cost effective solution to his client. Since the scaffolding structure can be much leaner, less material and no ballast have to be transported to and assembled on the workspot.
The advantages for the utility owner are less costs and a shorter turnaround time which enables him to start up processes and business more quickly, increasing overal uptime of his installations.
In general this technology contributes to more sustainable maintenance activity.
