A Turkish researcher has developed and patented an intelligent video surveillance system. The embedded software helps object tracking and detects abandoned objects using visible and thermal camera systems.

This prevents false detections due to stationary objects, such as people sitting on a bench and enables detection and tracking of persons who abandon the object. This helps for a rapid detection for prevention of potential threats.

Rapid detection of abandoned objects is important for the security of public spaces. While the security personnel is employed to detect suspicious objects, it is difficult to detect these in a timely fashion to prevent catastrophic events. As such, real time systems with false alarm rate are desirable.

The four features of this technology can be listed as:
1. The designed system has low false alarm rate.
2. It enables individual tracking or people and the objects they carry.
3. It increases the security of public spaces such as airports and shopping malls.
4. The system works automatically.

Advantages and Innovations:
The thermal cameras which are used in addition to visible band cameras provide heat signatures. This enables detection and tracking of people and their belongings individually. Hence, it allows extraction of information that a person in the camera view has a luggage and cases such as abandonment of the luggage or passing the luggage over to another person could be detected.
