Una spin-off de una universidad italiana ofrece la licencia de un bioensayo in vitro patentado. La tecnología se emplea para medir la toxicidad general de matrices ambientales acuosas y es un método rápido, sencillo y económico que no utiliza organismos vivos. La tecnología se basa en un dispositivo sencillo para medir la actividad de anhidrasa carbónica, que presenta una inhibición de su actividad enzimática proporcional a la toxicidad de la muestra cuando se expone a matrices acuosas que contienen sustancias tóxicas (metales pesados, compuestos organoclorados, organofosfatos, carbamatos y bifenilos policlorados). La solución se aplica en aguas superficiales, aguas subterráneas, aguas residuales, agua potable y sedimentos marinos, así como en procesos de biorremediación. Se buscan fabricantes y vendedores de kits de bioensayos con el fin de establecer acuerdos de licencia o joint venture.

Summary:
A Southern Italy spin-off company is offering the license of a patented bioassay in vitro. The technology can be used for measuring general toxicity of aqueous environmental matrices, representing a quick, simple, and low cost method which does not use living organisms. License agreement or joint venture are sought with producers and marketers of the biossay kit.

Description:
The technology offered uses a simple device to measure the carbonic anhydrase activity in solution, which shows an inhibition of its enzymatic activity proportional to the toxicity of the sample when exposed to aqueous matrices containing toxic substances (heavy metals, organochlorine, organ phosphates and carbamates pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls).
This innovative ecotoxicological technology can be applied to: surface water, groundwater, waste waters (for their leaching or their recycling), drinking water, freshwater and marine sediments. It can also be applied to soil samples (elutriate, leachate) and in bioremediation processes.
The research staff has been working for several years to study the effects of pollutants on physiology of animal organisms and to develop and apply biomarkers as indicators of environmental stress.

Advantages and Innovations:
The technology offered is innovative because:
· utilises a biological molecule, the enzyme carbonic anhydrase, which detector of the toxicity of environmental samples;
· offers the possibility of measuring the degree of toxicity of environmental aqueous matrices in a much more rapid, simple, economical than traditional tests toxicity performed on living organisms;
· the enzymatic method proposed represents an advantageous alternative to conventional toxicity tests carried out on live animals, allowing to obtain perfectly reliable results, corresponding to those obtained with traditional tests;
· the main advantages of this invention, by an application point of view, are represented by its toxicological specificity , speed and low costs, features that make it suitable for routine applications;
· this method responds to the continuing demand for screening methodologies reliable, sensitive, easy to use and low cost for environmental monitoring.
