Technology for making cellulose sludge ideal for bio-gas feeding
Summary:
A Turkish SME active in industrial bio-technologies has developed an enzyme which makes cellulose sludge, waste of cellulose production, pumpable for using in bio-gas production and makes bio-gas production faster and more efficient. The enzyme shortens cellulose chains and transforms them into biomass with bacterial digestion. The process makes the sludge ideal for the digestion of methanogenic bacteria. The company is open for joint venture agreements as well as investments.
Description:
Waste material of cellulose production, the cellulose sludge, is a problematic feed when used in bio-gas production processes. The sludge has a high dry material content (30-40%) thus is not suitable for pumping to the reactor. This feature makes the sludge very difficult in processing high volume productions. Also, long chains of cellulose is hard to process by methane producing microorganisms and needs to be shortened for optimal digestion by methane producing bacteria.

A Turkish bio-technology SME has developed an industrial enzyme that transforms long cellulose chains in the sludge to shorter ones and to bio-mass. The resultant material becomes pumpable and suitable for the digestion of methanogenic bacteria. Thus a waste material very difficult to process becomes a valuable bio-gas feed.

The company is looking for joint venture agreements with organizations from the paper / pulp industry in order to upscale their enzyme production and related services. The company is open for agreements with investors as well.
Advantages and Innovations:
In conventional methods, cellulose based materials are used with or without chemical pre-treatment (pre-digestion with caustic soda) for bio-gas manufacturing. When used without pre-treatment, methane production becomes very slow in the reactor and chemical pre-treatment increases the cost of gas production.

With the developed enzyme, cellulose sludge is biologically treated and rapidly transformed into a pumpable feed that contains biological microorganisms. This technology makes the sludge a valuable feed for bio-gas reactors in a cost effective way.
