Technologies from a particular Space program present interesting opportunities and solutions for the transition from linear to circular economy models.

The Space R-Y-D program has resulted in two water recycling technologies, a grey water treatment unit and an urine treatment unit. The Dutch company is active since 2005 as valorisation partner of the European Space Agency (ESA). The Dutch company is looking for industry partners active in the water recycling field to license these technologies.

The grey water treatment unit is a membrane-based filtration system that treats contaminated water and removes unwanted particles and micro-organisms (bacteria and viruses). Common sources of grey water include water from showers, cooking, air dehumidifiers, clothes washing and dish washing units.

The unit employs three membrane separation stages: a nano-filtration stage and two stages of reverse osmosis. Each successive stage of filtration separates specific particles ranging from high molecular weight macromolecules, complex organic molecules, micro-organisms, viruses, to ions. The system has the capacity either to operate autonomously or to be customized to user preferences. The outcome of this water treatment enables recovery of 95% and more of the waste water.

The urine treatment unit uses patented Space technology to treat and purify urine, condensate, and lightly contaminated grey water in order to recover hygienic water. The system will remove volatile organics found in urine and transform urea into a manageable form. This unit has the capacity to operate autonomously under the control of software that can be customized for specific requirements.

The treatment of urine, condensate and lightly contaminated grey water with this unit enables over 95% removal of nitrogen, over 98% removal of phosphorous and 90-95% recovery of hygienic water from waste water that is free from microbial contamination, safe and meets ESA hygiene water quality. The treated water is safe for discharge or reuse in hygienic applications such as toilet flushing, showering, and domestic or industrial cleaning purposes.

Advantages and Innovations:
The grey water treatment unit works autonomousely and can be customised. The unit has three membrane separation units to filtrate even on ion level.

The urine treatment unit uses patented Space technology and meets the highest European Space Agency´s hygiene water quality standard.

The treated water is safe for discharge or reuse in hygienic applications such as toilet flushing, showering, and domestic or industrial cleaning purposes.

Both systems reduce the environmental impact of waste water.
