Un centro de investigación español del sector de las TIC, en colaboración con una empresa responsable de sistemas de abastecimiento de agua en zonas urbanas con más de dos millones de habitantes, ha desarrollado soluciones informáticas integradas para optimizar la gestión de recursos hídricos. Estas soluciones ofrecen información extensa y fiable del consumo real y determinan los parámetros para un uso más racional del agua. Sus servicios cubren todos los aspectos del ciclo del agua, incluyendo abastecimiento, transporte, potabilización y distribución de agua potable, recogida, tratamiento de aguas residuales y retorno del agua al medio natural con el mínimo impacto ambiental posible. Se buscan socios con el fin de probar y mejorar la herramienta e identificar posibles mejoras antes de su lanzamiento al mercado.


ICT for water resources management
A Spanish research centre on ICT sector has developed together with a big company responsible for water supply systems in city areas with more than 2 million inhabitants, advanced and integrated IT solutions to optimize water resources management, providing exhaustive and reliable information on real consumption and determining the parameters to reach a more rational use of water. They seek partners to test and improve the tool detecting possible improvements before introducing it in the market.
The Spanish research centre is working actively on ICT solutions for intelligent management, combining operations research, IoT, cloud computing or big data. It is an association of 120 companies coming mainly from the ICT sector and from other industrial sectors with intensive use of ICT.
Water management can benefit from the deployment of ICT solutions in many different aspects: demand forecasting, real time monitoring, water leaks detection, improved generation scheduling, increased control of the generation system, reduction of energy consumption in the generation activity, etc. Therefore, ICT increased usage at water operators is a common tool for efficiency improvement, a key aspect of the emerging smart cities. However, current deployed solutions suffer from complexity, narrow focus and reduced levels of accuracy, standardization and interoperability. Therefore, heterogeneous systems, isolated or weakly connected automation processes are common situations in many systems, hindering, or impeding, the exploitation of the whole potential of a holistic ICT approach.
The expertise of the research centre in several ICT fields can improve water efficiency in real-life scenarios at various levels, having in mind a global vision of the system.
The centre has been doing intensive research in scheduling and forecasting methodologies and software. In addition, it is specialised in ambient intelligence, having experience in both, wired and wireless, sensor networks and large-scale sensor architectures. Besides, they have extensive experience in context-aware computing, having applied it to various real world projects.
It is also remarkable its experience in cyber-physical systems (embedded software, real time systems, critical systems V-Y-V), cloud computing and big data, being a founder member of the Big Data Value Association and specializing in platforms and infrastructures to manage great volume of data, data science and big data visualization -Y- insights.
They have also worked on interoperability for many years in order to generate new knowledge, methods and software tools for increasing the efficiency in processes where heterogeneous systems have to interact.
Their experience encompasses large industries where demonstration activities have been carried out and tools have been integrated into process control systems.
The centre together with a big company that manages water supply systems, have been researching in the development of an innovative IT solution for the management of water resources that provides exhaustive and reliable information on real consumption.
The company has deployed and is managing most of the region cities water systems. It has developed sectored water networks in the region and has implemented several technological prototypes in monitoring, control and prevision. Its services cover all aspects of the water cycle including sourcing, transporting, potabilization and distributing drinking water, as well as collection, wastewater treatment and returning it to nature with the least possible impact on the environment. Moreover, it is recognised nationwide as reference for entities managing these services, which they do for more than 1,500,000 clients in municipalities with more than 2,000,000 inhabitants.
