Una pyme austríaca ha mejorado un proceso para el tratamiento criogénico profundo de piezas. Este proceso en múltiples etapas recientemente desarrollado mejora el rendimiento de una amplia variedad de materiales mediante temperaturas criogénicas profundas. El tratamiento permite obtener mejores resultados y una mayor eficiencia debido a la reducción del tiempo del proceso si se compara con los métodos convencionales. Durante este proceso, las piezas son tratadas en varios ciclos de calentamiento y enfriamiento. Se trata de un proceso por ordenador, con gráfica de temperatura/tiempo repetible y precisa. El método es ecológico, no genera residuos y necesita menos energía. Se buscan socios con el fin de establecer acuerdos de fabricación, cooperación y comercialización con asistencia técnica.

Deep cryogenic treatment to increase material performance of tools, components and music instruments
Summary:
An Austrian SME has refined the process of deep cryogenic treatment (DCT) of workpieces. This newly-developed multistage process increases the performance of a wide range of materials by the use of deep cryogenic temperatures. DCT leads to better results and more efficiency due to lower process time respectively to conventional methods. Types of partnerships considered are manufacturing agreement, technical cooperation agreement and commercial agreement with technical assistance.
Description:
Deep cryogenic treatment (DCT) is a thermal process down to minus 180 degree Celsius. An Austrian SME has developed a multistage 15-hour thermal cycling process together with a Spanish company. Compared to the 40-hour alternative, the multistage process gives better results and is more efficient. During this procedure, work pieces are treated to several cooling and heating loops. This is a computer-operated (CNC) process, so the temperature/time graph is repeatable and precise. Furthermore the method is environmentally friendly as no waste is produced and less energy needed compared to the standard process.

DCT has several effects, and is not limited to metals. It can increase the wear resistance of tools (up to 4 times) and components thanks to the finer distribution of carbides in the materials due to the formation of eta carbides (on steel parts). This 15hrs process is already in use for machining tools, stamping, punching and forming tools, all kinds of knifes, razor blades, wood carving tools etc. as well as for components like gears, break discs etc.
The steel material is altered by changing the retained austenite into martensite primarily for stamping, punching and forming tools.
Inner material stresses can be reduced due to the slow cooling and heating ramps which can be employed for engine blocks, cylinder heads, as well as Al components for aerospace/satellite elements but also for gun barrels, etc.
This treatment can also be used on tungsten carbide tools to change the stresses in the binder phase to higher compression stresses. This increases the forces needed to break out tungsten carbide particles and therefore increases the lifetime of the (machining) tools.
Copper based alloys seem to change their thermal and electrical conductivity when DCT is applied. Very positive effects have been seen on welding electrodes made of CuCr-alloys and WCu.
Wood is also treated mainly for music instruments, thus changing the sound of the instrument.

Every market with abrasive wear problems, stress relief issues and dimensional stability issues, such as:
- machining industry (cutting tools, drills, mills, reamers, inserts; stamping, punching and forming dies etc.)
-automotive (gears, break discs and pads, engine blocks, cylinder heads, exhaust pipes, (valve) springs, etc.)
-aerospace (in addition to all above mentioned tools, Aluminum components for stress relief and improved strength)
-agriculture and wood (mower blades, ploughs, wood carving tools, chain cutting tools, cutter blocks, etc.)
-food industry (cutting knifes, cutting blades, mixers, etc.)
-music industry (guitars, strings, brass instruments, vacuum tubes for amplifiers, etc.)
-electronics (resistance welding electrodes, audio cables, etc.)
-The Austrian SME also offers DCT chambers built according to customers´ specific needs.

The Austrian SME is looking for industrial partners for manufacturing agreements or technical cooperation agreements for further development. Commercial agreements with technical cooperation is also considered.
